Guillermo in
action again


Waianae's Samson Guillermo will be back in Colorado tomorrow and Saturday for the U.S. Challenge, trying to qualify for the Pan-American Games or the World Championships.

Guillermo won the U.S. Amateur Boxing championship last Friday in the 119-pound weight division at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Guillermo, currently a student at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich., returned to Michigan for a couple days before heading back to Colorado.

Guillermo's coach, Bruce Kawano, will be with him at the U.S. Challenge.

The top four finishers from each weight class will box off, with the winner earning a spot in the Pan-American Games in August in the Dominican Republic. The runner-up gets to go to Worlds in July in Thailand.

The Pan-Am Games are the qualifiers for the Olympics.

HPU drops pair in California

DAVIS, Calif. >> UC Davis' Megan Turman hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to send Hawaii Pacific to a second straight softball loss yesterday.

The Aggies beat the Sea Warriors (18-16) 5-0 and 4-2.

Jessica Parra pitched all 11 innings in the second game, allowing eight hits. The HPU defense made six errors in the game.

UC Davis (25-6) is the top-ranked team in the NCAA West Region poll.

Hawaii golfers finish back in pack

SANTA BARBARA, Calf. >> The Hawaii men's golf team finished 16th in the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Monday.

UH finished with an 18-over-par 882. Fresno State won the 21-team event with an 841, two shots ahead of UC Irvine.

Matt Kodama led UH with an even-par 216, good for a tie for 24th place. Justin Kim shot a 218.

FSU's Nick Watney was first with a 199, after carding rounds of 67-64-68.

KGMB airing title game twice

KGMB, Hawaii's CBS affiliate, will broadcast the NCAA men's basketball championship game twice this Monday.

The title game will be shown live at 3 p.m. then shown again at 8 p.m.

Saturday's first semifinal between Marquette and Kansas will be shown at 1:07 p.m. The second semifinal between Syracuse and Texas is scheduled to start at 3:41 p.m.

Kimo's surf meet begins holding period

Some 50 longboard surfers are expected to compete in the 26th Kimo's Jerry Boser Memorial Longboard Contest off the Mala Wharf in Lahaina, Maui.

The holding period begins April 20 and runs through August. Last year's event saw the largest field ever compete with 54 surfers. For more information, call jack Starr at 661-4811.
