Listen for Iz’s
‘Over the Rainbow’
on television

AS big as Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was in life, his music today has achieved a prominence he never got to see. Most recently, the music of "Iz" singing "Over the Rainbow" will be featured on the WB Network show, "Charmed," slated to air Sunday. It'll be carried locally from 8 to 9 p.m. on KFVE, Channel 5. Starring in the drama are Rose McGowan, Molly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano ... Iz's "Rainbow" song is also featured in Lifetime Television's original movie, "Tempted," starring Virginia Madsen, Lainie Kazan and Jason Momoa which Lifetime will rebroadcast on a periodic basis ...

PREDICTION: That Carl English will be suited up for the UH Rainbows basketball team next year. It was a good decision on his part to throw his name into the NBA draft mix to test the waters. But if he finds, as I suspect he will, interest isn't as great as he thinks it should be, he will return for his senior year and be even a fatter catch next year. Note -- he didn't hire an agent, so he has until June 19 to withdraw his name and look forward to UH ball in the fall ...

FANS of former UH quarterback Nick Rolovich can keep up with his European adventures through the weekly journal he writes for the Denver Broncos Web site. Rolo signed a free agent contract with the Broncos and has been assigned to the NFL Europe's Rhein Fire before returning to Denver for their fall camp. Just look for he Rolovich Diary link under www.denverbroncos.com ...

You don't necessarily associate a belly dancer with the days of local yore, but Willow Chang did a kind of combo bellydance / hula, accompanied by the Kingpins. The crowd, most of whom weren't even around in the '50s, still had a ball on the dancefloor gyrating to such tunes as "Wipeout," "Pipeline" and the like when not lubricating themselves with maitais. Don Ho showed up and had to enjoy it more than anyone, since he was there in the '50s ...

HERE'S someone else who was around in the '50s: Mason Altiery, who was an anchorman on TV when it was still in black and white -- ask your parents what that means. Altiery today has put all that behind him, and is getting in some golf, gardening and work in communications for Occidental Insurance ...

Cruisin'

STILL performing on cruise ships is Matt Yee. He's currently on the Navigator doing the Eastern and Western Caribbean run, and will be back home for a vacation on May 3. That won't last long, however, since Yee will be making island cruises on the Legend and the Vision in Hawaii in May. In August he'll be cruising the highspots of the Mediterranean on the Splendor through October. Call him Yee of the Sea ...
