Kahe Santos was the right man at the right time for Kamehameha last night.

Santos drove in Nick Freitas with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors a 5-4 Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball victory over Mid-Pacific at Ala Wai Field.

"Kahe is a gamer," Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie said. "He's a bit of a free swinger, but he's aggressive up there. He's just the guy I want up with the game on the line. He's been clutch all year."

Trailing 4-3 going into their final at-bat, the Warriors tied it up on Freitas' RBI single. Later, with the bases loaded and one out, Santos hit a long fly to right field that dropped in for a single against the pulled-in Owls outfield, and Freitas trotted home with the winning run.

"I was just trying to do my part, trying to hit it hard somewhere," Santos said.

Santos finished 3-for-4 with two hard-hit doubles to right-center and two RBIs.

Kamehameha improved to 5-1 and remained a game behind Iolani (6-0), which beat Pac-Five 3-1 yesterday. The defending state champion Owls dropped below .500 at 2-3-1.

"They've just got too many weapons," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "We thought we could hold them, but you always think you can hold them."

The Owls rallied gallantly for four runs in the sixth inning to wipe out Kamehameha's 2-0 lead.

But pitcher Harry Kuroda, who fanned eight Warriors, was unable to keep his momentum in the seventh.

"He got tired, but he's all we got," Muramaru said.

Kamehameha's Kaulana Chang, in relief of Issac Kamai, went 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit or walking a batter as he earned the win.

Chang came in with the bases loaded in the sixth after three Owls crossed the plate. One more run scored, but he got two outs to stem the MPI tide.

"Chang came in in a very tough situation," Ramie said. "And he did a fantastic job to get out of it."

The Warriors went up 2-0 with single runs in the fourth and fifth on RBI hits by Santos and JP Kennedy.

Kamai gave up just one hit through the first five innings before Mid-Pacific finally figured him out in the sixth. Keven Whalen's two-run single and four walks led to the Owls' temporary 4-2 lead.

Santos doubled and Ryson Mauricio singled him home as Kamehameha cut the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Mid-Pacific has no time to rest, with a home game tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. against first-place Iolani.

Muramaru is disappointed the last-inning lead didn't hold up, but he isn't fretting.

"We'll show up (against Iolani)," he said.

The Warriors play Marykoll tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. at DeSa Field.

"I feel good about the team," Santos said. "We're improving every game. We knew it was going to be hard to come back, but we knew we could do it as long as we were doing it together and not as individuals."
