at KHON

Alema Harrington will be the new sports director at KHON-TV2, starting sometime next month, sources told the Star-Bulletin yesterday.

Harrington, who worked for KSL-TV in Salt Lake City from 1996 to 2002, declined to comment yesterday. He returned to Hawaii two months ago, and has been working on projects for the Hawaii Sports Network and the Hawaiian Islanders arena football team.

The Punahou and Brigham Young graduate was the weekend sports anchor at KHNL, the Honolulu NBC affiliate, from 1994 to 1996 and was previously sports director at KCCN radio.

While at Salt Lake City, Harrington also hosted the weekly shows of BYU football coach Gary Crowton and basketball coach Steve Cleveland.

Harrington replaces Jai Cunningham, who moves to news.

Warriors advance in Anteater Classic

Francisco Brignole won his sixth straight match at the Anteater Classic at Irvine, Calif., yesterday to put the Hawaii men's tennis team into the championship rounds.

Brignole swept Pedja Pavlicic 6-2, 6-4 to help the Warriors beat Southwest Missouri State 4-3. The Warriors (11-9) will take on UC Irvine today.

Seasiders slip up on road trip

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader yesterday.

In each game the Seasiders took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning only to see the home team score four times in the inning to win the game.

Lisa Hansen and Regina Molifua were the losing pitchers.

Maui's Walsh surfs into second round

Maui's Ian Walsh won his first round heat at the $10,000 Wild Surf Billabong Pro Teen Series at Newcastle Beach in Australia yesterday.

Walsh was the only Hawaii surfer to advance to the second round, which continues today.

Guillermo into final at U.S. Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. >> Waianae's Samson Guillermo beat Troy Medford of Oregon 21-13 yesterday to reach the 119-pound final at the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships.

Guillermo will meet Rafael Valenzuela of Phoenix in today's final. Valenzuela beat Kevin Hudgins of Florida 20-10.

Guillermo was eliminated in the quarterfinals last year. He has won Junior Olympic world and national titles.

Division II top performers

>> Leo Sing Chow, UH-Hilo softball: The freshman from Waipahu is having no trouble adjusting to the college game, earning her first player of the week award last week. Sing Chow won all four games she pitched in, allowing just one earned run in 22 innings. The Vulcans' southpaw has still never lost a collegiate game, going 8-0 in nine appearances.

>> Wen-Lung Chang, Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis: With Peter Madarassy nursing a pulled hamstring, Chang made the difference in the Seasiders second win over Hawaii Pacific. Chang beat Jan Tribler, who is ranked 39th in the nation, in straight sets to keep the Seasiders unbeaten in the conference.
