Charity auction offers private
party with Chef Yamaguchi

Chef Roy Yamaguchi would like to throw you a private party over at his house.

All you need to do is be the winning bidder -- but your cash goes to benefit the dogs, cats and all the other furry and feathered friends that fall under the care of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

The private party in Yamaguchi's home is up for bid April 5 in the silent auction at Tuxes and Tails, the society's annual fund-raiser at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

Yamaguchi, along with chefs Hiroshi Fukui of L'Uraku and Doug Lum of Mariposa, will cook a dinner for 20 for the winning bidder. Neiman Marcus will provide the table decor and favors.

Other good eats up for bid: Dinner for 10 in the JMD Beverages wine cellar, with wines paired to each course, and Sunday brunch for two at Orchids in the Halekulani.

The fund-raising dinner is themed "The Petropolitan Museum of Art," and the dining room will be turned into a contemporary museum featuring art pieces that incorporate animals. Dogs will be allowed to visit with guests on the Ocean Lanai for cocktails. Creating the meal for the night are Yamaguchi; Russell Siu, of 3660 on the Rise; Daniel Delbrel, of the Sheraton-Waikiki; and Göran Streng, of the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Tickets are $200. Call 946-2187, Ext. 213.

Taste of the Stars

Book early for Leeward Community College's "Taste of the Stars" event and save 20 bucks on this massive "grazing event" that will feature dishes from two dozen top local chefs.

The fund-raiser for LCC's culinary program is May 3 on the campus lawn. Tickets are $100, but the school is offering an $80 early-bird special until April 11.

"Taste of the Stars" is an all-you-can-eat (and drink) event featuring such chefs as Philippe Padovani, George Mavrothalassitis, Sam Choy, Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi. Call 455-0298 for reservations.

Focus on isle fish

The Ship's Tavern in the Sheraton Moana Surfrider is putting the spotlight on onaga, mahimahi and opakapaka in a "Fabulous Island Fish" promotion through Saturday.

Dinner specials include mahi on warm sweet potato salad; opakapaka blackened, sauté or broiled with foie gras; and Fire Hot Pot-au-feu of Island Fish, with onaga in a sesame-chili fish broth.

Call 922-3111.
