Bags will be searched at Blaisdell and Shell

All backpacks, briefcases, large handbags, diaper bags, tote bags, coolers or containers carried into events at Neal Blaisdell Center or the Waikiki Shell will be searched, the city announced yesterday.

The city advised patrons not to bring containers larger than clutch purses or fanny packs to either location.

"Speed lines" for those who do not have large, hand-carried items will be set up.

Friends of marsh plan to clean it tomorrow

More than 100 Windward residents plan to rid Kawainui Marsh of invasive waterweeds and trash tomorrow during a community cleanup effort.

The volunteers will finish efforts begun by city and state workers who have removed much of the Salvinia molesta weed with herbicide spraying and heavy equipment.

Some people will be removing salvinia and other unwanted, non-native plants by hand. Others will help with trash collection and brush removal.

"This cleanup is a great opportunity for the community to come out and help protect and preserve this incredible resource," said Kailua Neighborhood Board Chairwoman Kathy Bryant-Hunter.

For more information, contact state Sen. Bob Hogue's office at 587-7215, or meet at 8 a.m. at the Hawaiian Earth Products Ltd. green-waste facility along Kapaa Quarry Road.

Man whose foot was amputated wins case

HILO >> A Big Island jury has awarded $1.1 million to a Hilo man who had to have part of his left leg amputated after being misdiagnosed.

Peter Wade, 39, contended he received substandard care from Dr. Rachel Tortolini and the Bay Clinic, resulting in the loss of his leg just below the knee.

"I wanted to jump but I can't," said Wade, a former flooring contractor. "I only have one ankle."

Tortolini diagnosed Wade's leg pain in November 1999 as a minor ligament strain and suggested he suffered from bipolar disorder, according to the lawsuit.

The diagnosis prompted Wade to pursue only psychiatric care, said Charles Ferrera, his lawyer.

By the next month, he said, Wade had developed a blood clot that cut off circulation to his foot and forced the amputation.

Tortolini, who is now medical director at Kau Hospital, said jurors ignored medical evidence that proved the clot did not develop until about a month after her diagnosis.

"They went for the sympathy vote," Tortolini said.

Her attorney, Gary Hagerman, said a new trial might be sought.

Corrections and clarifications

>> Ted Liu, state Business, Economic Development & Tourism director, has been on the job since Jan. 10. A story on Page A3 Wednesday gave an incorrect start date.

>> If the state's gasoline price cap were in effect now, the estimated maximum retail price of gas in Honolulu this week would be $2.28 a gallon, not $2.12 as reported in a story on Page A1 Wednesday.

2 groups of men fight after beef on freeway

Two groups of men "exchanged words" while driving and then pulled off the freeway for a fight, police said.
