Society tracing owner of dog that bit man

WAILUKU >> Maui Humane Society officials said they are tracing the identity of the owner of a dog that bit a Wailuku man resting in Iao Stream.

Nicholas Cotton was swimming in a stream pool Tuesday when the mixed-breed pit bull attacked him after a man laughingly instructed the animal to "go scare him," a Humane Society official said.

The dog, about 150 pounds, swam to Cotton and bit his head. Officials say they have the license plate of a vehicle and are in the process of tracing the individual's identity.

Humane Society officials said they plan to send a report to the county prosecutor's office to determine if the man could be charged with assault.

Shriners warns of donation scam

Aloha Shriners is warning the public of a moneymaking scam using the organization's name.

A Kona woman, whose husband is a Shriner, reported she received a phone call Thursday evening from a man soliciting a donation for the Aloha Shriners' or Aloha Temple's Patients' Transportation Fund. The man identified himself as Jim Rogers.

When the woman said her husband was a member of the Masonic fraternity, the caller hung up.

Don Orton, recorder for the Aloha Shriners, said the organization never uses telemarketing to solicit funds.

Shriners units or clubs usually raise funds by car washes, barbecue chicken sales or spaghetti dinners.

5 hikers airlifted after being stranded on trail

Fire Department rescue personnel airlifted five hikers to safety after they became stranded by rising water in Kalauao Stream in Aiea about 7:30 last night.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the hikers had started out on the Aiea Loop Trail about 3 p.m. and then headed down a side trail toward a waterfall. He said the group had to cross Kalauao Stream several times.

The group of three men -- 22, 27 and 32 -- and two women, 22 and 24, from various parts of Oahu used a cellular phone to call 911 about 6:34 p.m.

Tejada said they were found not more than a mile or two from the trail head.
