Wie shoots 68, trails
pair by 3 strokes


The youngest competitor tied for the best round of the day, but Mark West left Pearl Country Club holding at least a share of the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play Championship lead for the third straight day.

West starts today's final round tied with Travis Toyama, who shot an even-par 72 yesterday to share the lead with a three-day total of 212.

West fired a 73 yesterday.

Chase Chulakote is at 213 after a 72, and Norman-Ganin Asao and Jonathan Ota are at 214.

The youngest competitor in the event -- Michelle Wie, 13, --fired a 4-under 68 a day after completing a round of 76, and trails West by just three shots.

Mitoyuki Kurokawa also carded a 68 yesterday and is tied with Wie at 215.

Defending tournament champion Joe Phengsavath rebounded from a 77 on Friday to shoot a 71--218 yesterday, tied for ninth place.


UH finished at Kia Klassic

FULLERTON, Calif. >> Rain washed out Hawaii's final game at the Kia Klassic yesterday.

UH (15-10) was scheduled to play Louisiana-Lafayette in a consolation game.

The Rainbow Wahine finished 1-3 in the 16-team tournament, with the win against No. 4 Texas, and the losses to No. 9 Cal State Fullerton, No. 5 Washington and Fresno State.

Melissa Coogan earned the win against the Longhorns and took two of the losses in the tournament to bring her record to 12-4 this season.

So far this season, UH is 4-4 against ranked teams, including a win against No. 3 California and a loss to No. 1 UCLA.

The Rainbow Wahine host the Hawaii Invitational next weekend, with participating teams including No. 18 Ohio State, Wisconsin and Pacific.

The Western Athletic Conference regular season starts on April 4, when Hawaii travels to Fresno State.

Sea Warriors drop two: Western New Mexico beat Hawaii Pacific twice yesterday at HPU's Windward campus field.

The Lady 'Stangs (22-1, 2-0 Pacific West) erupted for five runs in the third en route to an 8-2 win in the first game.

Kristin Fujii had two hits and an RBI for the Sea Warriors (16-6, 5-3), who totaled just six hits in the first game against Angela Slaugh. Slaugh improved to 12-0 this season. Jessica Parra took the loss for HPU.

Seasiders win again in women's tennis

Top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii swept past Bowdoin 6-0 yesterday in women's tennis to improve to 13-0.

Adrienn Hegedus posted a 6-0, 6-0 win against Alexis Bawden and Amy Sun and Trisha Piercy each lost just one game in their matches.

BYUH won its 42nd consecutive match, and has won 143 of 144 matches.

BYUH hosts Sacramento State on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Gowdy finishes sixth at zone diving meet

OKLAHOMA CITY >> Hawaii's Mike Gowdy placed sixth yesterday at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships.

Gowdy, a junior from Ontario, Canada, will represent UH at the NCAA Championships on March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.

Gowdy totaled 417.65 points and teammate Jonathan Coyle was ninth with 362.45 points.

Maggie Roberts scored 355.9 on the platform to finish eighth among 14 women divers.

Robbs, Reardon to speak at QB Club

Donn Robbs, Gary Dickman and Star-Bulletin reporter Dave Reardon will speak at tomorrow's QB Club meeting.

Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant starts at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon.
