Attorney suspended again for misconduct

The state Supreme Court has suspended Kauai attorney Arthur Trask Jr. from the practice of law, effective March 31.

Trask already was on suspension, since 1999, for ethical misconduct in a separate disciplinary case.

In the latest case, Trask was suspended for multiple acts of professional misconduct, including failing to diligently prosecute a personal injury claim for his client, notify the client of his 1999 suspension, advise the client that she should seek legal advice elsewhere, file a mandatory affidavit of compliance with his 1999 suspension order and respond to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel's repeated requests for information about his client's ethics complaint.

Trask, 52, was admitted to the Hawaii bar in 1982.

Foundation grant will fund free medications

Thousands of Hawaii's poor will get free prescription drugs from a statewide program launched yesterday with a $3 million check from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

Gov. Linda Lingle said the Prescription Care Hawaii program is a public-private effort expected to help 20,000 of the state's needy get vital medication at no cost to taxpayers.

In part, it is to prevent discharged patients from landing back in the hospital because they could not afford expensive prescription drugs. The program links patients to various pharmaceutical company assistance programs that donate free drugs.

New part being sent to stranded aircraft

Hawaiian Airlines planned to use a new Boeing 767 to ferry a replacement part to American Samoa for an aircraft damaged in a collision with a bird on a flight from Honolulu.

The 767 was to depart for Pago Pago after it arrived in Honolulu last night from the Boeing factory in Seattle, airline spokesman Keoni Wagner said. The plane will carry a nose cone to replace the one damaged Thursday, Wagner said.

The mishap, involving another Boeing 767, stranded 237 passengers who were to fly to Honolulu on Thursday night, he said.

Bad checks prompt warning on Big Island

The Hawaii County Police Department is warning merchants that there have been a large number of bad checks being passed throughout the county.

Police said merchants and their employees should insist that an unknown person trying to cash a check show a photo identification.

They should also verify that the name on the check matches the name on the person's photo identification.

They also advised that third-party checks should be avoided.

Members of the general public are also advised that if they have lost or misplaced checks or have personal checks stolen, they should notify their banks or other financial institutions to stop payment on the missing checks.
