‘Season for Peace’
includes music


A concert and a lecture are among the events planned this month by churches observing the "Season for Peace and Nonviolence."

>> Musician James Twyman, who is known as "the peace troubadour," will perform in a 7 p.m. concert tomorrow at Unity Church, 3608 Diamond Head Circle. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for seniors and military members. Call 735-4436.

>> Jean Houston, co-director of the Foundation for Mind Research, will present a seminar on "Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Times" from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Central Union Church Parish Hall. Tickets are $25. Tuesday is the registration deadline. Call Sugi Carlson at 535-6701 or write to scarlson@aulike.org.

The period between the Jan. 30 anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the April 4 killing of Martin Luther King Jr. is observed in several cities with events that memorialize the two advocates for nonviolent social and political change.


Baha'i New Year party features music, food

Members of the Baha'i faith will celebrate their New Year Friday with a community meal and musical program.

The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. at the Honolulu Baha'i Center, 2165 10th Ave. For members it is the end of a 19-day fast during which they abstained from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Naw-Ruz, which coincides with the spring equinox, begins the Year 160, counting from the foundation of the religion in Persia.

Baha'i teaching centers on the oneness of God, religion and humankind.

Free sessions discuss the power of prayer

Prayer as personal expression, healing tool and group activity will be explored in the Windward Revival next weekend.

The Rev. John Guernsey, who leads missionary training seminars for the American Episcopal Church, will be guest speaker at the three-day event sponsored by Windward Oahu Episcopal churches.

All sessions are free and open to the public. His topics will be:

>> "Personal Prayer," 7 p.m. Friday, Calvary Episcopal Church, 45-435 Aumoku St., Kaneohe.

>> "Healing Prayer," 7 p.m. next Saturday, St. Christopher's Church, 93 N. Kainalu Drive, Kailua.

>> "The Praying Church -- Corporate Prayer," 9 a.m. March 23, Windward Community College, 45-720 Keaahala Road, Kaneohe.

Guernsey, chairman of the Sharing of Ministries Abroad program, is rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Woodbridge, Va.

Speakers discuss time spent in Middle East

Friends of Sabeel, an organization working for a just peace in the Middle East, will meet Tuesday to hear from speakers who recently spent six weeks in Israel and the West Bank.

"Sojourners in the Holy Land: Witness to Hope and Despair" is the theme of the 7 p.m. program at the First Christian Church, 1516 Kewalo St. David and Kathy Wurfel, founders of the Hawaii chapter, will speak. They returned in December from the Middle East.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

St. Andrew's hosts free "Passion" concert

St. Andrew's Cathedral will be the concert hall for a free performance of "The Passion According to St. John" at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Cantata Choir and Chamber Orchestra of Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., will perform the composition of Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of cathedral member Richard Hicks. The high school musical organization, which has performed in international tours, will be directed by William Thomas and feature music faculty soloists Joe Dan Harper, Allen Combs and Krista River.

Government gathers for prayer breakfast

Former Hawaii athlete Charlie Wedemeyer and wife Lucy will be the keynote speakers at the Hawaii Prayer Breakfast at 7 a.m. April 11 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.

Representatives of federal, state and county government agencies as well as members of several Christian organizations traditionally attend the event.

Wedemeyer was diagnosed with "Lou Gehrig's disease" in 1977. He was given the President's Award as Disabled American of the Year in 1992 for his work since that time as an inspirational speaker. He played football for Punahou School and Michigan State University, where he was on the 1966 team that won a national championship.
