dreardon@starbulletin.comThe BOR committee on finance and facilities unanimously approved the proposal yesterday, which athletic director Herman Frazier said will significantly help balance UH-Manoa's $17 million budget for intercollegiate sports and generate future growth.
"We believe this will get us somewhere in the neighborhood of $400,000 to $500,000 (in the coming year)," Frazier said.
The key to the plan is increasing revenue via premium seat donations. In football, season-ticket purchasers for certain areas of Aloha Stadium will be charged from $25 to $100 in addition to the price of the seven-game package for 2003. The seat donation fee will also increase the two following years to range from $35 to $220.
In 2002, the first year of premium seat donations for UH, the extra charge for football was $25 or $50 and affected 3,313 booster club (Ahahui Koa Anuenue) members. Under the proposal, 22,778 additional seats fall under the booster club's jurisdiction, allowing the donation to be charged.
Also, prices for most individual game tickets will be increased slightly. But some game ticket prices and even season-ticket packages (north end zone) will go down in price.
UH students will not be charged premiums, and UH faculty and staff will be charged half the regular premium.
"It's the university's and the students' team," Frazier said.
Ticket prices for individual games will continue to be priced according to level of opponent.
The most expensive football season-ticket package for 2003 (prime sideline seats) will likely be $235 ($135 tickets, $100 donation) compared to $185 ($135, $50) last year.
The most expensive volleyball season-ticket package this year (lower arena) will be $215 ($155, $60) compared to $195 ($155, $40).
Also, the donation fees are 80 percent tax deductible.
There is no timetable yet for when season-ticket renewals for fall sports will be mailed out, but UH is far ahead of last year, when its pricing schedule wasn't approved until the spring BOR meeting.
