Chef Mavro tapped
for Beard award

Chef George Mavrothalassitis was nominated yesterday for a James Beard Foundation Award as Best Chef in the Northwest/Hawaii. It is the chef's third nomination.

Mavrothalassitis, owner of Honolulu's Chef Mavro, is the only Hawaii chef on the finalists' list. The other nominations went to chefs from Portland, Ore., and Seattle: Claire Archibald of Café Azul and Vitaly Paley of Paley's Place Bistro & Bar, both in Portland; and Eric Tanaka of Dahlia Lounge and Scott Carsberg of Lempreia, both in Seattle.

The coveted James Beard awards, to be announced in May in New York City, annually recognize the best chefs in regions across the country.

Nominated for Outstanding Chef nationwide are Mario Batali of Babbo (who will be visiting Hawaii next week for a three-day event at the Mauna Lani Hotel & Bungalows), Alfred Portale of Gotham Bar & Grill, Tom Colicchio of Gramercy Tavern and Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin -- all in New York -- and Nobu Matsuhisa of Nobu in New York and Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills.

Nominated as the nation's best restaurant are Chanterelle, New York; Valentino, Santa Monica, Calif.; Zuni Cafe, San Francisco; Topolobampo, Chicago; and Galatoire's, New Orleans.
