semifinals tonight

The 24-VII dance ensemble won yesterday's Young Dancer preliminary round on CBS's "Star Search" and advances to the competition's semifinal round, airing at 8 p.m. today.

But here's the deal: Because the series airs live on the mainland, public voting will start at 3 p.m. today at www.cbs.com/star. Even with the handicap, 24-VII -- dancers Kuponohi'ipoi Aweau, Jordan Ofoia, Orlando Ortega, Jay Queja and Alicia Vela-Bailey -- earned 33 stars, beating their competition by six stars.

The group's high-energy jazz style dazzled judges Naomi Judd, Ben Stein, Ahmet Zappa and Kim Coles.

Tonight, they'll be competing to move to the finals, and the ultimate grand prize of $100,000.

24-VII Danceforce's director is Marcelo Pacleb, who has provided many youths with opportunities over the years to launch careers in performing arts, dance and teaching.
