Meal raises cash
for trip to cook-off

Fifteen Kapiolani Community College students are headed to Portland, Ore., later this month to do battle in the American Culinary Federation's Western Regional Competition.

The students will create, prepare and present a four-course meal, going up against eight other junior teams for the regional title.

To hone their skills -- and to raise money for the Portland trip -- the team is serving a six-course dinner, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at KCC's Ka 'Ikena Dining Room.

The menu includes Kahuku Prawn and Foie Gras Steamed Bun, Seared Moi with Sake-Braised Lotus Root and Wild Mushrooms, and Five-Spice Rack of Lamb. Cost is $100, including wine. Call 734-9570.

The KCC team qualified for the regionals by winning the state title recently in Kona. If the students win in Portland, they'll be among four regional winners going on to national competition this summer.

Food festival fun

High school students will compete for culinary honors at Saturday's Food Festival '03, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pearl City High School.

Several high school food-service programs will participate in a "Ready, Set, Cook"-type cooking competition, with the audience picking the winners. Chef Russell Siu of 3660 on the Rise will provide the professional aspect with a cooking demonstration.

All this on-stage cooking should make you hungry, so the students will sell mini-plate lunches, both for the experience and to raise funds for their individual programs.

Participating will be Waianae, Waialua, Pearl City, Moanalua, Farrington and Waipahu high schools.

Also on tap: a silent auction, sale of dishes made by high school ceramic programs, craft booths and food product sales.

Proceeds will help purchase digital video equipment for the Pearl City High Media Department. Call 453-6524.

The wine is to die for

James Bond will be there in spirit when Ad 2 Honolulu celebrates its Spring Palette wine-tasting, 6:30 p.m. March 21 at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa. Theme of the fund-raiser is "Live to Wine Another Day," in keeping with the Bond-esque nature of the evening.

Featured will be a Bordeaux wine tasting, along with scotch, sake and vodka martini tastings by Fujioka's Wine Merchants.

Also included are a buffet dinner, silent auction, art exhibit and fashion show by Shanghai Tang and ADASA Hawaii. Entertainment will be by the jazz-funk band the Turnstyles and ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro.

Tickets are $45 in advance or $55 at the door, to benefit charitable programs and scholarships of Ad 2 Honolulu, a community service organization made up of professionals in advertising and related fields.
