Irons, Garcia ousted
from Quiksilver Pro



SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia >> Hawaii's Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia were eliminated after yesterday's fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro $250,000 World Championship.

Irons, the reigning world champ, had two 8-plus rides, but Australian Jake Patterson scored a 9.57 and a 9.3 on his last two rides to advance.

Australia's Mick Fanning eliminated Garcia 17.9-15.03. Garcia and Irons finish tied for ninth and receive $5,000 each.

Keaulana wins Buffalos: Russ Keaulana won the men's surfing portion of the Buffalos Big Board Surfing Classic at Makaha Beach yesterday.

Keaulana also teamed up with Bonga Perkins to win the team event. Desiree Desoto won the women's contest and Jesus Navarro beat Charlie Carroll for the legends title.


Hilo-Matsuzaka game ends in 2-2 tie

KAILUA-KONA >> Joel Zimmerman had a six-inning, no-hit performance but didn't figure in the decision as Hawaii-Hilo and Matsuzaka University of Japan played to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition baseball game at Simmons Field.

The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, capitalizing on two Matsuzaka errors. The Japanese team took the lead briefly in the top of the seventh only to have Hilo tie it in the bottom of the inning when Chris Savio scored on a single by Danny Rhodes.

With their campus field still unplayable, the Vulcans will use Simmons Field for the opener of their next series. Hilo plays Western Illinois on March 23 in Kailua-Kona, then plays at Wong Stadium March 24-25.

Wahine tennis team falls to Anteaters

IRVINE, Calif. >> The Hawaii women's tennis team finished its three-match road trip to California yesterday, falling to UC Irvine 6-1.

The Anteaters took an early 1-0 lead when winning two of the three doubles matches. The Wahine's No. 3 duo of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor won their contest against UCI's Hui Leow and Amy Tranckino 8-1.

UH's lone singles win came at No. 6 when Kimberly Curtis defeated Kristina Boss 4-6, 6-3 (10-6).

The Wahine (4-8) host Buffalo tomorrow and Illinois State on Wednesday.

Hawaii fencers medal at national meet

Hawaii fencers fared well on the opening day of the 5th USFA National Fencing Competition at the Blaisdell Center on Saturday.

Janice Kato won the women's epee, while 16-year-old Joshua Thurlow took gold in the open epee event. Placing second and third in open sabre were Yervan Zacharyan and Eric Fragas.

Bridenstine, Comiso top Bike Path 10K

Mark Bridenstine and Connie Comiso won their respective divisions at yesterday's Pearl Harbor Bike Path 10K.

Bridenstine led the men's division with a time of 35 minutes, 5 seconds. Dave Millet was second in 35:31.

Comiso finished in 43:42, 16 seconds ahead of Erin Young in the women's division.
