Ex-Olympic athletes
dine at Aaron’s


A number of people who achieved athletic glory in earlier years were well taken care of at Aaron's by Aaron Placourakis and Skip Lambert Sunday night. The Hawaii Chapter of U.S. Olympians held its annual dinner, organized by Sonny Tanabe, at the restaurant. UH Athletic Director Herman Frazier, an Olympic official and track gold medalist, was speaker. Giving the prayer in Hawaiian and English were Danny Kaleikini and Kevin Asano. Former Olympians attending, besides Tanabe, Frazier, Asano and Chapter President Chris Woo, were: Bill Smith, Pete George, Emerick Ishikawa, Tommy Kono, Ford Konno, Evelyn Kawamoto Konno, Pete Velasco, Verneda Thomas, Brent Berk, Mike Rothwell, Al Minn, Keala O'Sullivan Watson, Barbara Perry and Tita Marks Stack, representing her late husband Allen Stack ...

A Moroccan look

The theme for the May 17 Symphony Ball at the Sheraton Waikiki is "As Time Goes By," the song from the film "Casablanca." A Moroccan look will prevail at the event and will be reflected in a few menu items. To get ball organizers in the Moroccan mood, ball chairs Jim and Jan George held a small dinner at Casablanca, a Moroccan restaurant in Kailua, this week. Attending were Sheraton chef Dwight Yoshioka and catering sales manager Dulce Sanders, along with Al and Trudy Schandler-Wong, Don and Chris Clothier and Ruth Limtiaco. Casablanca chef Abdelfettah Benali shared Moroccan recipes ...

Hawaii Gagaku Kenkuykai provided music and dance last Saturday for the Academy of Arts' opening of the Rare Dolls from the Tsuji Family Collection. Twenty members of the Tsuji family traveled from Japan, New York, Seattle and San Diego to join local Tsuji daughter, Marian, former executive assistant to Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono, for the event. Japan's Consul General Masatoshi Muto thanked the family for their gift to the people of Hawaii. Over 100 dolls and accessories are on view through March 23 ...

Birthday party alert

There's a Pisces birthday party this weekend at Dale Bordner's home in the Haleiwa area. Among the birthday celebrants are flashy gal-about-town Jane Stubenberg, Charley Meyer, who has "most eligible bachelor" status, and Canadian marathon runner and fireball Erin Kennedy.
