Firefighters Elden Tanaka and Scot Seguirant read some of their favorite Dr. Seuss books to first-graders at Kailua Elementary School yesterday. Schools across the country participated in the National Education Association's sixth annual celebration of the birthday of Dr. Theodor Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, with activities to encourage students to read. Kailua Elementary has been participating in the event for the past five years. Among the readers were firefighters, police officers, state Rep. Cynthia Thielen and state Sen. Fred Hemmings. Sunday marked Seuss's 99th birthday.
