Hawaii

By Dave Donnelly

Go on, twist Dave’s
arm to date this Mama

AN INVITE to attend the Alzheimer's fund-raiser March 18 at the Hilton's Tapa Tower came in and I wasn't sure I could make it. But that Paul Brown, who made the call, knew me as well as he knows the hair he styles for the elite of Hawaii society at his hair salon. He wanted me to "be the date" of Michelle Phillips, the gorgeous one of the Mamas and the Papas, who I met and flipped over when introduced to her by Brown some years ago. Needless to say, I was suddenly sure I could switch my schedule around to make it. Anyone in attendance who'd like an introduction, see me --and eat your heart out ...

BEER nuts, beware. The King Kamehameha Hotel in the heart of Kailua-Kona will be the scene of the Kona Brewers Festival. Sure, there'll be food, prepared by some 25 Hawaii restaurants, and music throughout the 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. fest, March 8, but the greatest attention for most will be devoted to the 60 types of ales and lagers prepared by 30 Hawaii and mainland brewers, each serving up two kinds of beer. Don't go there, quaff your brains and then drive home, however. You might think about an overnight stay ...

Heads and tales

LOTS of stage activity on tap. "Art" concludes its four week run Sunday at the Yellow Brick Studio on Keawe Street.... "Godspell" has opened at the Army Community Theatre at Fort Shafter ... "Beehive," featuring seven wailing women and a hot, six-piece band playing music of the '60s, opens Wednesday at Manoa Valley Theatre ... Or if you're a fan of local writer Lois-Ann Yamanaka, you can see the dramatization of her "Heads by Harry," the book which deals with taxidermy, opening March 13 at Kumu Kahua downtown ...

OR maybe the fact that St. Patrick's Day is but 18 days away has you in an Irish state of mind. Then you might want to see the Reader's Theater production of Sean O'Casey's "Drums Under the Window." It will be performed the next three Sundays at the Army Community Theatre ... And the touring company of "Spirit of the Dance," the "Riverdance"-like production of traditional Irish step dancing combined with Latino rhythms of flamenco and salsa, plays March 11 to 16 at the Hawaii Theatre. The dancers get the next day off to celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the huge Nuuanu street party presided over by Don Murphy, of Murphy's Bar & Grill. And yes, oyster lovers, there'll be thousands of the little bi-valves there to consume ...

Irish stick together

AS an Irishman through and through, I should mention there's more going on than the downtown bash put on by Murphy and Skip Naftel of O'Toole's and Johnny Ferguson in the courtyard behind his Ferguson's Pub in the Dillingham Transportation Building on the 17th. There will be a St. Patrick's Day parade on the 17th and for those interesting in participating, call Matthew Fitzgerald at 722-4051 ... The Celtic Pipes and Drums will celebrate Paddy's Day on the 17th at the Sheraton Waikiki, first on the Diamond head lawn, then at the main pool stage and finishing up at the Esprit Patio.

Erin go bragh ...
