Get out of here
to go see ‘Out’

THE word is out. Or should we say, the word is "Out." That's what Jason Stuart, who'll be headlining the Comedy Club at the Queen Kapiolani, calls himself. He actually would like his engagement to be billed as "My Big Fat Gay Jewish Comedy Tour." You may recognize Stuart for his appearances on "My Wife & Kids," "Will and Grace," "Providence" and other TV shows ... With a name like Andy Irons, you'd think he'd be a golfer -- a good playing mate with Tiger Woods -- but Andy is a surf dude. About 100 people gathered at Duke's Canoe Club Kauai to honor Irons for his achievements and positive influence on Kauai youth ...

ONCE again, the English-Speaking Union's Shakespeare competition will take place at the Wo International Center on the Punahou Campus on Saturday. Winners from various high schools will compete in both monologue and sonnet categories, the winner getting a trip to New York for national competition. And once again, I'm pleased to be one of the judges. I was also moderator for the first annual Reader's Digest "word power" challenge, won by Our Savior Lutheran School 6th grader Bruce Pfirrmann. He and his parents will travel to the national championships on March 24 to 26 at Colonial Williamsburg, Va., moderated by "Today" show weatherman Al Roker. The Pfirrmans are with the Navy and recently located here from the Norfolk area and are looking forward seeing old friends back there ...

Harvard yard man

So it is with local attorney Rich Turbin, lauded in the Harvard Law Bulletin for being in the Traphagen Distinguished Alumni Speakers series. He discussed his career as a plaintiff's barrister at Harvard, the invite coming from Law School Dean Robert C. Clark. Turbin's certificate of appreciation from the Dean stated, "Dynamic attorney, outstanding citizen leader, acclaimed ABA activist, Harvard graduate extraordinaire; with great skill, rare dedication and uncommon zest, you unstintingly serve your clients, community and profession." ...

WANT to get seduced by four lovely women? Silly question, right? But that's what awaits those who see "Seduction" at the Arts at Mark's Garage, opening March 13. Taking part in the cabaret show, full of sassy, sexy and sizzling musical numbers, are Julie Capili, Katie Doyle, Naomi Mal and Zenia Zambrano, who must hate it whenever names are listed alphabetically ...

Snug as a bug

THE latest in real "Oriental" rugs -- hand knotted in Asia -- are available at -- Costco? Yep, local entrepreneurs Jamie Mather and Melissa Vincenty, who spent many years in Asia, have started a company with Tibetan weaving experts in Nepal and now have them turning out Oriental rugs with a difference, Hawaii-inspired tropical designs -- plumeria, torch ginger and sea turtle subjects. They're on view in the Waipio Costo through March 9 ...
