UH's Coogan heating up



The Hawaii softball team swept a double-header at Loyola Marymount yesterday.

Rainbow Wahine hurler Melissa Coogan pitched back-to-back complete games as Hawaii beat LMU 4-1 and 2-0. The sophomore struck out four and gave up nine hits in two games.

The Rainbow Wahine scored four runs in the fourth inning of Game 1, highlighted by Justina Kahaku's two-run single.

In the seventh inning of Game 2, LMU (3-10) put runners on the corners, but Coogan got pinch hitter Tara Sheehan to ground out to end the game.

Hawaii (8-6) plays at UC Riverside today.



University, Maryknoll win in ILH

University upset Damien 50-44 last night to advance in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu postseason basketball tournament.

The tournament is held to determine the league's third berth in next week's state tournament. Iolani (14-0) and Saint Louis (11-3) have already clinched spots in the states.

The Jr. 'Bows outscored the host Monarchs 18-13 in the final quarter by converting 12 of 19 free throws.

The Jr. 'Bows visit Punahou (7-7) tonight at 6:30 in the semifinals of the tournament.

BYUH topples HPU in match of elite teams

Third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated rival Hawaii Pacific 6-3 in men's tennis yesterday. The defending national champions (3-0) took two of three doubles matches and won four of six singles matches against No. 2 HPU (2-1).

Kaloi wins in doubles: Kamehameha senior Kimberly Kaloi and partner Gia Nafarrete of Seal Beach, Calif. captured the USTA girls' 18 open doubles title yesterday.

Kaloi and Nafarrete defeated Crystal Knysh (Encinitas, Calif.) and Emma Taylor (La Jolla, Calif.) 8-6 at Central Oahu Regional Park. Kaloi was the only player from Hawaii to reach a final.



Wichita State defeats UH-Hilo again

Wichita State exploded for four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to overwhelm Hawaii-Hilo 13-4 yesterday at Simmons Field.

The Shockers won all seven games in the five-day series against the Vulcans (3-23).



Players nominated for McDonald's team

Moanalua two-sport standout Patti Hardimon has been nominated for the McDonald's All-American basketball team.

Ten other girls were nominated: Pearl City's Christie Ayers; Lahainaluna's Fatai Hala'api'api; University's Diane Okubo; Kaimuki's Dalia Solia; Punahou's Rachel Kane, Becky Hogue and Elyse Umeda; Kamehameha's Megan Ching; McKinley's Amber Lee and Farrington's Mele Mateaki.

Four boys are also on the list: Saint Louis' Jason Rivers; Iolani's Bobby Nash; Kaimuki's Daniel Tautofi and Maui's Ma'afu Finau.



Smith and Stoklos together again

Beach volleyball legends Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos will conduct two beach volleyball camps on Oahu this month.

The skills camps run Feb. 24-27 and will be broken into two sessions that will provide basic skill instruction for players of all ages and levels. Hawaii native and AVP player Lia Young is the guest clinician.

Camps will be held on Feb. 24-25 at Queen's Beach in Waikiki and on Feb. 26-27 at Kapiolani Park near the bandstand. The clinic times are 3-5 p.m. The cost is $50 per day.
