A chocolatey and wet
V-Day to remember

VALENTINE'S DAY has come and gone, but it was one that Maui's Pacific 'O restaurant manager Greg Butterfield won't soon forget. To begin, his reservations book was filled to overflowing and so, too, was the seating area. That didn't stop those with later reservations from congregating outside, alas, in the rain. Butterfield sprang into action, putting up tents to at least keep people dry, opening the upstairs private party space for everyone, lighting a bunch of candles and going overboard to make sure every diner had a Valentine's evening to remember. And providing complimentary red roses and chocolate-dipped strawberries didn't hurt, either ...

WHEN you first hear South Korea's Dr. Kim Soon Kwon begin to speak, you might think he's talking about the Peace Corps. But no, he's more than likely talking about a subject close to his heart which he calls Peace Corn. Kwon, recipient of the East-West Center's Distinguished Service Award, has been working to improve agricultural production in Asia, especially concentrating on improving corn cultivation in North Korea. He was an EWC student in the 1970s ...

'60s throwbacks

THE next production of Manoa Valley Theatre is "Beehive," opening March 5, a wild, outrageous high-energy music celebrating the rock music of that era. Seven wailing women, a hot six-piece band and 15 cans of hairspray a week will go into the show, featuring music by the Supremes, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Cher and many more ... This Friday will see "Music USA --from Blues to Broadway" opening at the Bright Theater in Kaneohe. It marks director Ron Bright's 48th year of directing shows in Kaneohe ... And "Waiting for Godot," Samuel Beckett's avant-garde play made popular in the '60s, gets even more avant-garde March 12 to 16 in the UH Ernst Theatre when Vladimir and Estragon meet Tarokaja and Jirokaja in a kyogen-style staging of the work ...

And if you're into something steamier, the musical cabaret show opening for two weekends at the Arts at Mark's Garage on March 13 is called "Seduction," and Andrew Meader has the enviable task of directing a quartet of damsels played by Naomi Mall, Julie Capili, Zenia Zambrano and Katie Doyle ... Ran into Jackie Burke the other day and she thrust into my hand Vol. 1, Issue 1 of "The O File News Journal" which she's editing. It's a tabloid newspaper about Hawaiian issues ...

Mass celebration

MARYKNOLL School capped its 75th anniversary celebration with a Founders Day mass at St. Ann Church in Kaneohe, presided over by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo. The event paid tribute to the school's founding Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, showcasing the many anniversary-themed activities that occurred throughout the year -- things like an alumni reunion trip to Maryknoll Sisters Center in New York, participation in the Aloha Festivals Parade with 75th anniversary float and the school's annual Kekumano Scholarship Dinner which honored Maryknoll grad Nina Keali'iwahamana Rapozo ...
