But we don’t get
‘snow days’ to take off

LOOKING AT the massive mainland snowfalls on TV yesterday once again brought to mind the thought, "Lucky you live Hawaii." We complain about a bit of rain like it's a big deal, but after seeing all that snow, it doesn't seem so bad ... More on TV: The huge anti-war turnout in San Francisco clogged the streets with an estimated 200,000 people. The turnout was surprising, to be sure, until I recalled that during my trek to London last fall, more than twice that many people marched the streets of London, and that was just over the protesting of a law aimed at eliminating fox hunting in Great Britain. And Hawaii had a piddling 500 folks protesting the possibility of war with Iraq turn out in Honolulu. Numbers -- and causes -- can be deceptive ...

I FIRST met (and "fell in love with") Michelle Phillips, former member of the legendary Mamas & the Papas, through her longtime pal Paul Brown. Hawaii's best known hairdresser has talked the still stunning Phillips into flying in from L.A. to attend the Alzheimer's Association fund-raiser, "Moonlight & Magic." Her presence is most appropriate since it is a '60s themed event. Also appearing will be another '60s icon, Jesse Colin Young. One person who is highly unlikely to show up is Dennis Hopper, who was married to Phillips for all of eight days, making the marriages of J-Lo look long-termed ...

Yellow brick road

THEY knew something was coming up at the Yellow Brick Theatre on Keawe Street last week when two fellows came in to give the place the once-over. It wasn't that they planned to take in the production of Yasmina Reza's both serious and hilarious play, "Art" that night, but their boss was. And so it happened that Gov. Linda Lingle became the first governor to visit the little theater, now in its third year. If you must know, she was there with a gentleman friend and after the show congratulated the cast and all concerned for an excellent production ...

WHEN "Music USA -- from Blues to Broadway" opens Friday at the Bright Theatre in Kaneohe, it'll be a benchmark for director Ron Bright, for whom the theater was named. It will mark his 48th year as director at the Kaneohe locale. The evening will open with an unveiling of artist Wayne Takazano's portrait of Bright, which will hang permanently in the lobby ...

Touchdown!

CONTRARY to popular belief, some diehard football fans can be romantic. Take Dallas Cowboys faithful Ryan Brownell, for example. He recently won a "Sports Hunk Valentine" package on KKEA's "Sports Cafe" with Bobby Curran and Jo McGarry, courtesy of Aston. Brownell was selected after candidly admitting he made his wife watch every Cowboys game this season, departing their North Shore residence by 6:30 a.m. every Sunday to get to a satellite TV. His winning the contest resulted in his taking his forlorn wife to the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel for a two-night stay with Breakfast on the Beach and a romantic Valentine's dinner for two at Tiki's Grill & Bar. That should score him a touchdown at home! ...
