UH sporting events
to reach Asia, Israel

KHNL/KFVE has reached broadcast agreements with networks in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel and the Philippines to show University of Hawaii athletic events.

More than 60 games this season will be televised, most receiving an average of two airings -- resulting in nearly 500 broadcasts throughout the countries.

"This is an excellent opportunity for UH to gain international exposure and promote the university and its athletic programs," UH athletic director Herman Frazier said. "It also contributes to the university's vision of establishing itself as a bridge between the East and the West."

BYUH slips by HPU in OT

Scott Salisbury scored five of his 16 points in overtime to help No. 19 Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Hawaii Pacific 70-61 at the Blaisdell Arena.

Alexus Foyle poured in 28 points and Salisbury added nine rebounds and two blocks for the Seasiders (13-2, 7-1), who remain a game ahead of Hawaii-Hilo in the Pacific West Conference.

BYUH next travels to Hilo to play the Vulcans on Feb. 21 and 22.

Nic Walters scored for HPU with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 58. BYUH could not get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.

BYUH scored the first six points in overtime and HPU (13-7, 2-6) never recovered.

The Seasiders started strong, scoring the first 13 points of the game, but the Sea Warriors tied it at 21. BYUH led 34-28 at halftime.

Aaron Abrams paced HPU with 19 points. Leandro Maruoka had 13 points, 16 rebounds and four steals.

Fitzgerald, Kemp, Goya heading to Vulcan Hall

Former Hawaii-Hilo student-athletes Pat Fitzgerald and Laurie Kemp, as well as community leader Tom Goya, will be inducted into the 2003 City Bank/Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 11th annual event will be held on Feb. 22 in the UH-Hilo Campus Center Dining Room. The doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner to follow. Dinner reservations must be made by Feb. 20 by calling 974-7606.

Fitzgerald, a resident of Santa Rosa, Calif., is currently a teacher/boy's basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School. Fitzgerald was a two-time All-District II selection in basketball from 1978-80. He ended his career among the school's leaders in scoring, field goals and assists per game.

Kemp was an NAIA All-American in volleyball in 1991 and '92. She set a school record with 47 digs in a match.

Goya has served as a leader of the Vulcan Athletic Booster Club since 1979.

Miyamoto elected president of QB Club

Randy Miyamoto, owner of In-Motion Promotions and co-host of SBTC/Super Sports on 1500-AM, has been elected president of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The new officers take office at the Club's Banquet of Champions on Feb. 17.

HPU's Uegawachi gains independence

Bryce Uegawachi, a middle infielder, has signed to play for Kenosha, Wis., in the independent Frontier League this summer. Drafted in the 26th round by Cleveland in 2001, the former Kaiser and Hawaii Pacific standout played two seasons in the Indians organization.
