Hearts all aflutter

NICKY OSHIMA

While waiting for that perfect shot at the Hono-lulu Zoo's flamingo exhibit, Ricky Oshima formed some philosophical insights about the colorful birds.

"They eat together, bathe together, rest together. They do everything together -- they're just like human beings!" Oshima says.

The birds' festive pink feathers and graceful necks had Oshima hoping for the split-second opportunity to snap a flamingo-formed heart (which, of course, he did -- "I'm really proud of that picture. It took 30 minutes of waiting but it's a perfect heart shape. Not too symmetrical, more artistic, more modern looking.")

And after observing the flamingo's social habits, he got to thinking that the birds symbolize wonderfully the spirit of Valentine's Day.

"After all," Oshima says, "love is sharing. Right?"
