Hawaii
YOU'D THINK football could be put to rest until next fall, but not before mentioning a couple of local parties. One was at Zanzabar where pro quarterback turned sports agent Warren Moon tossed a party for his pal Tony Gonzalez, here to play in the Pro Bowl. It was a return to the scene for Moon, whose retirement party was organized by Zanzabar's Peter Maharaj at the club a couple of years ago ... Before heading off to San Diego for the Super Bowl, Maharaj also attended a big shindig at the Ocean Club attended by the likes of Moon, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jerry Rice, S.F. 49'er quarterback Jeff Garcia (who went on to have an awful Pro Bowl), agent Leigh Steinberg and ex-UH Warriors Ashley Lelei and Nick Rolovich, both now under contract to the Denver Broncos ... The last word on the
last football seasonI'D forgotten that just before the Super Bowl, David Letterman got his assistant, Stephanie (who he calls "Monte") on the phone to ask her prediction. She said Tampa Bay would win. Letterman, informing her that Oakland was favored, asked by how many points she thought the Buccaneers would win by. She didn't hesitate a minute: "26," she said. Letterman laughed until he almost cried. He just got back into live shows this week, and called Stephanie again. This time he called her a sports guru. Tampa Bay had actually beaten Oakland by 27 points, and no other media prediction was even close to Stephanie's. So much for women knowing nothing about football! ...
Case in point
IT'S not just new Congressman Ed Case who's getting his feet wet in Washington. So, too, is his wife, Audrey. She's been making the rounds of Washington functions, and at a White House coffee for spouses of new members of Congress, got to meet Laura Bush, wife of "Dubya." While touring the White House, Mrs. Case was approached by an assistant curator who asked, "Where are you from?" Case was surprised that the questioner was Donna Hayashi Smith, who grew up in Wahiawa and studied at the Smithsonian Institution before joining the White House staff. While Case found Mrs. Bush "warm and easy to talk with, friendly and welcoming," she was also thrilled to discover the homegrown talent of a curator from Hawaii's 2nd congressional district at work at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ...
"Art" marks
ON the last night off from rehearsals for "Art," the hilarious comedy about modern art which opens tonight at TAG, the Actors' Group, at the Yellow Brick Studio, 625 Keawe St., I popped over the Pali to see "Seamarks," written by the late Gardner McKay. Director Joyce Maltby has staged a first rate production, thanks in large part to the excellent performances of the two actors in the play, Peter Clark and Annie MacLachlan. Though he's part Hawaiian, Clark had a magnificent Western Ireland accent, while MacLachlan plays a woman from Wales now living in Liverpool. The question is, "Can a man in love with sea, switch his love to a woman?" With "Art" opening tonight and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" at Diamond Head Theatre, there's a lot of live theater in Honolulu these days ...
