A task force on Maui caught eight more veiled chameleons last week like the one shown above.

WAILUKU >> A multigovernment task force captured eight more veiled chameleons on Maui last week, bringing the total to 21 caught on the Valley Isle since March.

Importing, possessing or transporting veiled chameleons in Hawaii is illegal.

The reptiles pose a hazard to native species, said state Agriculture Chairwoman Sandra Kunimoto.

The veiled chameleons found last Monday and Tuesday in a 110-square-yard area in Makawao included a male 17 inches long, state officials said.

Also captured were 102 Jackson's chameleons, which also are alien to Hawaii.

State officials said all the captured lizards will be sent to the Bishop Museum for study.
