Woman, 41, dies after being hit by a car
A 41-year-old woman died from injuries after being struck by a car on Farrington Highway yesterday afternoon, Honolulu Police Traffic Sgt. William Baldwin reported. The woman got off a city bus on the south side of Farrington Highway at 1:10 p.m. and was crossing the street to the north on a diagonal, outside of a crosswalk, when she was struck by a 1988 Acura Integra driven by a 22-year-old Waipahu woman, police said.
The accident was about 170 feet east of Waiawa Road, near Leeward Community College.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at Pali Momi Hospital at 1:53 p.m. The driver of the Integra and her passengers -- a 26-year-old man and two infants -- were unharmed; all were wearing seatbelts or child restraints.
The driver, who was in the northernmost lane of Farrington Highway, attempted to avoid the woman, but the woman apparently was trying to beat the car, Baldwin said.
Alcohol and speed don't appear to be factors in the accident. The death is the seventh traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 10 at this time last year.
