1969: Bad floods
don't douse real estate
efforts in Keapuka

SCENE at Keapuka Sunday: Little old lady in bright scarf, apparently a real estate saleswoman, pounding in an "Open House" sign in front of an apartment building overlooking Keapuka, not 100 yards from the scene of Oahu's worst flooding damage. Mayor Fasi was heard to remark, "I wonder if she uses the action-packed view as a selling point." (Feb. 6, 1969) ... John Gregg Allerton, heir to the fabulous Allerton Gardens on Kauai, is a bit of a gardening nut himself, and has taken a personal hand in building a bamboo bridge for the new Pacific Botanical Garden at Lawai, Kauai. One visitor to the garden saw Allerton drive up and go to work, and asked the director, "Do all your gardeners come to work in Cadillacs?" (Feb. 5, 1971) ...

HAVE you heard about the new drink recipe? It consists of one cup Folger's Coffee, 1 1/2 ounces Christian Brothers brandy, and it's called Onward Christian Folger's. Maybe that explains why Mrs. Olson is always wearing that silly look ... And just maybe it was after one of these that Bob Loveless came up with the theme song of the Hawaiian Open: "Oh Schay Can You Schlee." (Feb. 6, 1973) ...

AS befits a champion, the champagne was iced and waiting for Jack Nicklaus when he returned to his Kahala Hilton room after his Hawaiian Open victory. And did you notice a trio of hula girls on the ABC-TV telecast? They were Leilani Petranek, Joan Albao and Les'lie Fernandes, the Kahala Sweethearts from Danny Kaleikini's show. (Feb. 5, 1974) ... Fellow Dodger fan Tosh Kaneshiro was almost speechless yesterday, and I don't mean because of his laryngitis. He learned that Dodger owner Walter O'Malley was making plans to have lunch at Columbia Inn with longtime isle pal John Bellinger. Maybe Tosh will put out a Dodger Blue tablecloth for O'Malley. (Feb. 3, 1977) ...

BACKGAMMON buff Joli Kansil was as nervous as he'd ever been during a game the other night at Trattoria. It wasn't that the competition was so tough, but his boyhood idol in New York, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio, was watching him play, just as years before he'd watched the Yankee Clipper playing his game. (Feb. 5, 1978) ... Some time back, Teddy Tanaka's mother game him an elaborate obi that was more than 50 years old and was sewn with 24-karat gold thread. Teddy, who's not into women's wear, had the material reassembled into a handsome jacket and had loads of material left over, so wife Nanci, no dummy she, had Allen Akina use it in a new gown he designed for her. The Tanakas will publicly unveil the ultimate in his and hers wear at their Kono Hawaii engagement Feb. 20 in Anaheim. (Feb. 4, 1979) ...

THE big cocktail party that Gourmet magazine threw for local ad execs at a Kahala beachfront home was a huge success. First, guests could see Maui, Lanai and Molokai on the perfect night. Secondly, everyone was impressed when Sylvester Stallone and his bride strode in (sans the "Rocky" theme) and finally, two whales began cavorting right in front of the party. Gourmet publisher Verne Westerberg told caterers Tad & Pat that cost was no object, but he was afraid the whales would break the budget. (Feb. 4, 1986) ...

PHOTOG Kim Taylor Reece was pleased to learn that all three of his entries for the Pele Awards for photography were accepted as finalists, which means they've all won at least a merit award. The three were his Aloha Liberty poster, the recently published Hula Kahiko III and the 1987 Hula Bowl poster. Speaking of that poster, the cutie sandwiched between three muscular, bare-chested gents in football helmets, Rocky Ching, has been chosen by Chanel to model their fashions at the Honolulu Symphony's benefit luncheon and fashion show tomorrow at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. (Feb. 6, 1987) ... A group of old-time Canlis' customers and ex-piano players are gathering there tomorrow night along with longtime manager Dave Hill for an aloha party. The restaurant's final night will be Saturday. (Feb. 2, 1989) ...
