There's no swimsuit or evening gown competition in basketball, and no one's happier for that fact than the Pearl City Chargers. Because if last night had been a beauty contest, the Chargers wouldn't be 8-0.

Last night on their home court, the Chargers defeated the Aiea Na Alii 47-34 to remain undefeated in an effort their coach called something less than pretty.

"That's our game, dirty basketball," said coach Lionel Villarmia. "Not dirty, like we take cheap shots, but it isn't pretty, it isn't fantastic."

Defense carried the Chargers again as the Leeward version of the "Purple People Eaters" held Na Alii to 34 points.

"All our games except one or two were like this," said Villarmia. "All season our defense is keeping us in the game."

Villarmia cited the quickness and depth of his guards as the backbone of his stingy defense and gave special attention to Royce Yuen and Isaiah Locquiao. While both were equally adept at disrupting the Aiea offense, the latter might have actually been the difference offensively as well.

In the fourth quarter, Na Alii had narrowed the gap to six points on four free throws by Samson Chung. The Aiea defense had also stepped up as a 1-1-3 zone defense was holding the Chargers without a field goal through three minutes in the final quarter.

When it appeared the visitors had seized momentum and were preparing for a run, Locquiao drilled two 3-pointers from both wings in just over a minute, deflating the Aiea spirit and halting the Aiea charge.

"I was kind of surprised because lately he hasn't been shooting well," said Villarmia. "But we tell him to keep shooting because sooner or later it's going to drop."

Locquiao finished the game with eight points, but he had help from Mike Hardy, who gave the Chargers a lift in the third quarter when he scored eight of his 10 points. Mike Adams also grabbed a handful of offensive boards down the stretch and finished with eight points.

"Hardy and Jon Charette are the guys who give us a boost off the bench, especially tonight when our starters were struggling," said Villarmia. "Adams is our hard worker, he's the guy who's going to pound and pound and pound. Every night he gets beat up, but he comes back for more."

Pearl City travels to Radford High School on Wednesday to face the Rams, a team that boasts an identical 8-0 record. After that game, one team will hold sole possession of first place in the OIA West.

"They're six-feet across the board. They've got good size," said Villarmia. "But we're going to turn on the pressure and see what we can do."

Radford 62, Waipahu 36: The unbeaten Rams jumped out to a 17-3 lead and never looked back in trouncing the Marauders. Charles Seanior had a game-high 21 points for Radford.
