Castle's Maeda honored


The National Football League has selected Castle football coach Nelson Maeda as its 2003 Hawaii High School Coach of the Year.

Maeda will be honored during a pregame ceremony on the field prior to tomorrow's Pro Bowl game at Aloha Stadium.

For winning this award, the NFL will provide Maeda with a trophy, $2,500 in cash for his football program and an all-expenses paid trip to attend the NFL's annual high school coaches summit during Hall of Fame Weekend in July at Canton, Ohio.

Hawaii athletes earn academic honors

Fifteen Hawaii athletes have been named to the 2002 Western Athletic Conference All-Academic teams for cross country, football, women's soccer and volleyball.

The cross country, women's soccer and volleyball teams each had four athletes honored, while the football team had three.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least fifty percent of the team's contests.

Of UH's honorees, senior quarterback Shawn Withey-Allen earned the highest grade point average with a 3.80 while majoring in communications.

Also from the football are Keani Alapa, Jr., 3.34, psychology, and David Gilmore, Jr., 3.61, travel industry management.

The women's cross country members are Teryn Bentley, Sr., 3.28, secondary education/American studies; Jodi Enomoto, Sr., 3.27, electrical engineering; Shayne Enright, Jr., 3.32, journalism, and Alethe West, So., 3.40, general arts and sciences

The women's soccer team's honorees are Wanette Miyashiro, Sr., 3.70, secondary education/business; Krystalynn Ontai, So., 3.25, general arts and sciences; Joelle Sugai, So., 3.80, general arts and sciences, and Noelle Takemoto, Sr., 3.49, Hawaiian studies

Making the list from the women's volleyball are Jennifer Carey, Sr., 3.38, business marketing; Hedder Illustre, Sr., 3.45, communications; Lily Kahumoku, Jr., 3.42, psychology, and Melissa Villaroman, Jr., 3.21, general business.
