Author offers critique of church in our time

Marva Dawn, author of "Reaching Out Without Dumbing Down" and other books that offer critical commentary on how the Christian church performs in the modern world, will speak in Honolulu next week.

Dawn, a teaching fellow in spiritual theology at Regent College in Vancouver, Wash., will preach at services Feb. 9 at Makiki Christian Church at 7:45 and 10 a.m. at the Hawaii Kai United Church of Christ. She will make an appearance at Logos Bookstore from 10:30 a.m. to noon next Saturday.

The author and executive director of Christians Equipped for Ministry will be the keynote speaker at a a Pastoral Leaders and Spouses Retreat sponsored by the Hawaii Conference, United Church of Christ, from Feb. 9 to 11 on the Big Island.

College scholarships offered to islanders

Hawaii Pacific University has established a scholarship for freshmen and transfer students who are actively involved in a religious organization in Hawaii or the Pacific islands.

Feb. 15 is the deadline to apply for the fall semester. Nominations must be made by the leadership of the student's religious community. For more information, call 543-8029.

Four full-tuition scholarships will be awarded each year and are renewable until completion of a bachelor's degree. The scholarship program is named for Dr. and Mrs. Frank E. Butterworth, honoring the retired superintendent of United Methodist Church in Hawaii and a former HPU trustee. He and his wife, Irene, have worked for years to raise education funds for Pacific Island students.

Motivational speaker in Honolulu Saturday

"Let's Heal the World," a look at current events from a spiritual perspective, will be the topic of Sunny Scott-Luther in a public lecture series opening next Saturday in Honolulu.

Her talk at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1508 Punahou St., starts at 2 p.m. and is free.

Scott-Luther, of Austin, Texas, presents faith, business and motivational seminars and appears on radio and television talk shows around the country. Her appearances include:

>> Feb. 9: 2 p.m. Kukui Grove, Lihue, Kauai. "War and Peace, Spiritual Solutions."

>> Feb. 15: 1 p.m., Maui Arts and Cultural Center. "Let's Heal the World."

>> Feb. 16: 1 p.m., Christian Science Reading Room, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. "Life Is a Spiritual Adventure."
