Islanders begin season
at Blaisdell on March 30

The Hawaiian Islanders open their second arenafootball2 season March 30 at home against the expansion Green Bay Blizzard.

The season opener is at 6 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena.

The Islanders went 5-11 a year ago in their first af2 season, and they'll remain in the National Conference West Division along with the Bakersfield Blitz and San Diego Riptide.

The defunct Fresno Frenzy have been replaced by the Wichita Stealth in the division.

The Islanders play half of their 16 games at the Blaisdell. They'll also play home games against the Riptide (April 26), Blitz (May 10, July 27), Stealth (May 16), Louisville Fire (May 31), the defending league champion Peoria Pirates (June 14) and Quad City Steamwheelers (June 28).

The Islanders' eight road games are against the Steamwheelers, Blitz, Stealth, Cincinnati Swarm, Arkansas Twisters, Tulsa Talons, and the Riptide twice.

The regular season ends July 27.

Musashimaru may miss next basho

TOKYO >> Hawaii grand champion Musashimaru may be forced to sit out the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in March, his coach said.

Musashimaru, who missed the New Year tournament because of a wrist injury, has been limited to light workouts and may not be able to properly prepare for the spring meet in Osaka, his stablemaster Musashigawa said yesterday.

"I don't want to push him too hard with the injury," Musashigawa told reporters. "I hope he recovers in time but wrestling in the spring tournament is not a priority."

Musashimaru has been sidelined since aggravating the injury to his left wrist in November's Kyushu tournament.

If Musashimaru withdraws, newly promoted Mongolian Asashoryu would be the only grand champion, or yokozuna, to participate in the spring tourney. Asashoryu was promoted to grand champion yesterday.
