With a mournful chant of lament amid Hawaiian rituals reserved for ali'i, her remains were taken to the church for a 24-hour vigil before her funeral. Brandt, a longtime educator, former University of Hawaii regent and two-time interim trustee of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, died Jan. 15 at the age of 96. "Aue Kamakakuolani e, Ua hala 'oe, ua pau e, Pau ho'i kou helena i ke ao e" -- Aue Kamakakuolani. You have passed; it is finished; your presence has faded from this earth. Hailama Farden offered the chant he wrote in tribute as he walked up the church driveway, lined by an honor guard of members of Hale O Na Ali'i, of which Brandt was the highest officer. Farden was followed by Brandt's daughter, Lorita Gladys Wichman; her grandson, David Wichman; and U.S. District Judge Sam King. As a conch shell announced the arrival, David Wichman carried the koa urn containing his grandmother's ashes up the church steps, where it was blessed by the Rev. David Kaupu, retired chaplain of the Kamehameha Schools.
