Qualified filers can
get free tax advice

Free help in preparing federal and state tax returns will be available once again this year for most elderly, low-income, non-English speaking, and/or disabled taxpayers.

The program, utilizing trained volunteers, is sponsored by the AARP (Tax-Aide), Internal Revenue Services, state Department of Taxation, community coalitions, educational institutions and military services.

For more information and for Neighbor Island/military locations, call AARP Tax-Aide at 1-877-227-7844 or 211 for the location of the nearest tax preparation site.

Contact AARP Tax-Aide State Coordinator, Kalfred Chang, at 531-8863, to arrange possible assistance for "shut-ins."

Bring your Social Security card or a current record from the Social Security Administration; federal and state tax form packets, as well as all necessary forms and documents; and copies of last year's federal and state tax returns.

No appointment is necessary unless indicated. Free electronic filing of federal and state tax returns are available at sites with the "e-file" notation. All sites are closed on state holidays and subject to change.
