Convicted felon held on numerous charges

A convicted felon with a history of violent escapes from police was charged last night with attempted assault, auto theft and criminal property damage for allegedly ramming a police car with a stolen Mercedes-Benz, and driving toward an officer on Jan. 4 in Waikiki.

William Barnes, 38, was arrested Wednesday on a parole revocation warrant. He was also charged with promoting a dangerous drug. His bail was set at $150,000.

Police said Barnes has 16 felony convictions, including assault, criminal property damage, theft, auto theft and accidents involving death or serious bodily injury.

Student arrested in pipe-bomb incident

A 16-year-old Farrington High School student was arrested yesterday for investigation of terroristic threatening after security officers saw him trying to ignite a four-inch pipe bomb near the school's swimming pool on campus.

The boy fled but later turned himself in to security, police said. He was arrested but released without charges pending investigation. The police bomb squad removed the bomb without incident.

Police suspect fugitive connected to break-ins

Honolulu police are looking for a convicted burglar in connection with recent break-ins in East Honolulu.

Jack Kulii Viela, 35, is wanted on a no-bail parole-revocation warrant and should be considered dangerous, according to police. Viela is known to frequent the Palolo, Kaimuki and Waikiki areas and is also known as Jack Kiuei Viela and Jack Kalii Veila.

He is described as 5 feet 10, 280 pounds, with a heavy build, black hair, brown eyes and a mustache. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.

Suspects caught after Aiea woman is robbed

Police arrested two men Wednesday night in Aiea on suspicion of stealing a woman's purse outside her apartment.

The woman, 42, told police she was about to open the front door at 11:55 p.m., when two men approached her.

One man had a handgun and demanded money, and he struck her on the head with the gun when she held onto her purse, she said.

A neighbor heard the commotion and called police, and a patrol sergeant arrested the suspects nearby, police said. Police recovered a handgun and the woman's purse, which they tracked down by calling her cellular telephone number.

Young mother busted on shoplifting charge

Police arrested a 17-year-old Waipahu girl for theft investigation Wednesday night after she allegedly stole shirts worth $1,700 from Macy's at Pearlridge Center.

Police said the girl, pushing her year-old infant in a stroller, entered the store at 8:38 p.m. Store security officers told police she put shirts into a backpack and left the store.

The girl was stopped outside and arrested. She was released without charges pending further investigation.

Police seek 2 men who forced way into home

Police are looking for two masked men with semi-automatic handguns who forced their way into a Waimanalo home last night, demanded money, and threatened and assaulted the residents.

Police said two men called out for the 25-year-old son of the owner of a Poliala Street home about 11:15 p.m. When the son unlocked the door, the men kicked the door open, forced the son to the floor at gunpoint and demanded money.

Police said the men also threw a 23-year-old woman to the floor. They fled before police arrived.

One man is described as 5 feet 6 and 180 pounds. The other man is described as 5 feet 8 and 140 pounds.

Both were wearing black nylon ski masks, dark nylon jackets and jeans.
