Why Dave is glued
to local TV news

WE'VE COME A long way, baby, from the old days of all-male TV crews: KGMB's top-rated team of Bob Sevey, Bob Jones, Tim Tindall and Jim Lathrop, later Joe Moore, on sports, was a great, but all male, crew. Now Moore, on KHON-TV, is the sole male-only anchor, and even he seems to be at least accustomed to having pretty Trini Kaopuiki doing the weather. The other stations seem to have more women than men in the field, and beauty doesn't seem to be a hindrance to employment. There have been numerous beauties on the air here who have moved to the mainland: Marisol Borromeo and Patti Lee come to mind, but I'm sure there are others. Currently topping at least one observer's beauty scale are KITV's Mahealani Richardson and KGMB's Cindy Palaracio. Former winner on the beauty scale, hands down, was Ku'ualoha Taylor, who moved from KGMB to KFMB in San Diego, and has now made an impression on the people at Playboy Magazine. No, she hasn't appeared in a Playboy spread -- at least not yet -- but she is currently appearing on the magazine's Web site poll under "Sexiest Meteorologist in America." You can check it out on playboy.com/sex/feature/weathergirls/07.html ...

SHADES of the '60s: Kikaida continues to be a favorite feature in Hawaii, just as it waswhen it debuted here in the late 1960s. When the Kikaida DVD was released on Dec. 31, it was an instant hit locally. Now, to celebrate the next Kikaida DVD, Vol. 2, fans are invited to join actor Ban Daisuke, "Jiro" in the series, and numerous characters from the DVD on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Borders Waikele, and then again on Jan. 25 at Wal-Mart Mililani (10 to 11 a.m.), Costco Waipio Gentry (1 to 2 p.m.) and Tower Video Kapiolani (4 to 5 p.m.). Bring the kids ...

Fault line

WONDER why the Sex Abuse Treatment Center chose Ruth's Chris Steak House in Restaurant Row to host the fifth annual "It's Not Your Fault" luncheon program? It might have something to do with the fact that Al Hosoi, G.M. of Ruth's Chris, is a member of the volunteer committee again spearheading the project of providing medical care, legal advocacy and counseling of the abused. Mimi Beams and Gerri Hayes are co-chairing he program, entitled "Healing Hearts, Building Futures." It's not taking place until Feb. 26, but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead ...

I WAS sorry to learn of the bleeding ulcer Tim Conway is suffering, forcing the scrubbing of the two man show he and Harvey Korman had planned for the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The two demonstrated they were the really funny "Odd Couple" from the skits they'd done on the Carol Burnett TV show. Let's hope they can reschedule ...

Joyce Kilmer country

OVER in Waimea, Parker Ranch employees have had their hands full rounding up cattle, saddling horses, checking fences, planting trees. Say what? More than 800 trees have been planted during "The Ranch Tree Project." The trees are meant to beautify and restore vast areas of the 200,000 acre ranch ...
