High surf pounds isles' northwest shores

Hawaii was hit yesterday by high surf generated by a storm that moved from northern Japan to the Aleutian Islands three days ago, the National Weather Service said yesterday.

All of Hawaii's northwest-facing shores were under a high-surf warning, with Oahu and Kauai forecast to get 25- to 35-foot waves last night. Heights were expected to drop today.

Maui, Molokai and Lanai had surf of 25 to 30 feet with higher sets last night, and could get 20- to 25-foot surf today.

The Big Island was forecast to get 8- to 12-foot waves with some higher sets last night and today.

Lingle will deliver State of State Jan. 21

Gov. Linda Lingle will deliver her State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21, a time and date that follows tradition.

After word leaked out last month that Lingle's staff was exploring a shift to a 6:30 p.m. television prime-time address, the governor made a formal request to the Legislature for the change.

House and Senate leaders notified her office yesterday that a change would be difficult because invitations to the dozens of dignitaries who attend the address had already been mailed.

4 in family, 3 more injured
in crash near Kualoa Ranch

A man and a woman and their two children were seriously injured this morning after their van collided with a car on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch.

City Emergency Medical Services officials said three other people also were injured but their injuries were not serious. They were taken to Castle Medical Center for treatment.

The accident, at the intersection of Johnson Road, occurred about 8:45 a.m. and brought traffic to a halt for about 45 minutes. Police closed off both directions of the highway for investigation and care of the injured.

Witnesses said the van was approaching the highway from Johnson Road and collided with a blue Honda heading toward Kahuku on the highway.

A fire official said the van carried a family of four, the parents and a boy and a girl. The four, all in serious condition, were flown to Queen's Medical Center by helicopter.

The father was thrown from the van and landed in the middle of highway while his daughter was thrown onto the side of the road, witnesses said.

Gilbert Gomes, who lives on the makai side of the intersection, said the family is from Waiahole. He said van veered off the highway from the impact and landed in his rooster coop.

Police fire shot in struggle with suspect

Kahuku police arrested a 31-year-old man who allegedly lunged at officers with a knife at Hauula Beach Park yesterday.

Two patrol officers spotted the suspect at the park about 3 p.m. and approached him because they knew he was wanted on three contempt warrants.

The suspect picked up a 2-foot metal stake and went after the officers, police said. His girlfriend took away the metal stake but he picked up a 6- to 8-inch knife and came toward the officers again, calling them names and saying, "Shoot me, shoot me," police said.

He lunged at the officers with the knife, and one officer fired a shot but it did not hit him, police said. The suspect ran away but was later located at a Honomu Street residence.

A 59-year-old former care-home operator was arrested yesterday for murder investigation in connection with April 9, 2002 death of a 102-year-old woman.

Initially no foul play was suspected, but the Honolulu Medical Examiner determined in August that it was a homicide due to neglect, said police homicide Lt. Bill Kato. He said the body had signs of malnourishment and bed sores.

Naked man runs from stolen car in Pearl City

Police are looking for a man who fled naked from a stolen car last night in Pearl City.

Police said a sergeant spotted a car parked at the end of Waiawa Road near Leeward Community College about midnight. He checked on the car's license number and discovered that the car was reported stolen in the burglary of a Pearl City home the day before.

The sergeant and an officer approached the car, but it sped away and later crashed into a fence on Ukee Place in Waikele.

After the crash, police said, a naked man came out of the car and ran away. Police gave chase but could not catch him.

Police found a 27-year-old woman in the car and arrested her for investigation of possession of stolen property, drugs and drug paraphernalia and firearm violation.

Police said they found "ice" pipe and property stolen in the Pearl City burglary in her purse. They also found a .22-caliber handgun in the car.
