1 of 5 monitors shows more New Year smoke

Only one of five Hawaii air-monitoring stations recorded a higher concentration of smoke from fireworks last Wednesday, compared with New Year's Day 2002, according to Wilfred Nagamine, manager of the state Department of Health's Clean Air Branch.

On Jan. 1, the Kapolei air-monitoring station recorded an average of 99 micrograms of particulates per cubic meter, compared with 55 micrograms on the same day last year.

Honolulu recorded 48 micrograms this year compared with 90 last year, while Liliha recorded 41 micrograms this year vs. 101 last year. The Pearl City station reported the same number of micrograms, 63. And in a 24-hour period, a Maui air-monitoring station recorded an average of 12 micrograms this year vs. 25 last year.

None of the five stations exceeded the state or federal safety standard of 150 micrograms per cubic meter over a 24-hour period, Nagamine said.

Nagamine also noted hazy conditions early Jan. 1 were not from the fireworks but from Kona wind conditions and vog.

Leukemia group seeks help with fund-raising

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is seeking Oahu and Big Island schools to participate in its Feb. 18-Mar. 7 fund-raising drive.

Last year 58 Oahu and Big Island schools raised $71,000 through the society's "Pennies for Patients" drive.

So far, 65 schools have signed up. Since 1994, Pennies for Patients has raised more than $10 million nationwide to fight leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.

The class in each school collecting the most money will receive a pizza party catered by Domino's Pizza.

Ministries' vessel pulled off Maui reef

WAILUKU >> The 85-foot vessel Messenger of Peace was pulled off the reef fronting Sugar Beach in south Maui yesterday.

State boating official Hal Silva said according to an initial report, water was leaking through some of the fittings but the vessel did not appear to be sinking. Silva said the vessel will be towed to Honolulu, where it will probably be disposed of.

"The hull has been compromised," Silva said.

The state took responsibility for the vessel after owner J.C. Ministries said it had no insurance or money to rescue it. J.C. Ministries had used the vessel for humanitarian missions to remote South Pacific islands.

It was about a quarter-mile offshore when strong winds broke the moorings and ran the vessel aground Saturday morning.

Police seek suspect for attempted murder

CrimeStoppers is asking for the public's help in finding a man for investigation of attempted murder of a police officer in Waikiki on Saturday.

Police said the officer saw a silver Mercedes Benz sedan make an illegal turn and drive in the wrong direction on Kaiulani Avenue about 1:45 p.m. The officer followed the sedan and approached the driver when it stopped on Cleghorn Street near Kapili Street.

But when the driver saw the officer, he sped in reverse and collided with a police patrol vehicle, police said. The officer ordered him to stop but the driver ducked behind the steering wheel and drove toward the officer, who jumped away.

The Mercedes is a 2000 to 2002 four-door model with a sun roof, gray or silver with black leather seats and wood trim interior, and a Hawaii license plate. It had damage to the rear, passenger-side brake and tail light assembly and bumper.

Police are asking that employees at vehicle repair shops be on the lookout for a car matching the description.

The driver was described as in his 30s, slender, with short black hair and clean shaven. He was wearing a wide-brim straw hat, blue polo shirt, and blue dress pants.

Anyone with information may contact Detective Larry Lawson directly at 529-3088. Anonymous calls may also be made to CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or by dialing *CRIME on a cellular telephone.
