A camp site at about 11,000 feet on Mauna Loa on the Big Island yielded this view of Mauna Kea. A long exposure produced the streaking stars. Hiking partner Alan Matsuoka and I made it to the summit and back in a day. Underexposed (I forgot the black lava eats up light), it was still nice enough to help me remember a great trip.

Folks cheered as fireman Steve Jenness brought out Cosmo, the only one home when a house fire started at 203 Ilihau St. in Aikahi in August. Firefighter Dave Yokoi of Kailua Station found Cosmo in the kitchen. Cosmo was dirty and wet, but apparently unharmed. Jenness is the Battalion Chief's aide. My wife and I have two dogs. They are definitely not "just animals." They're part of our ohana.
