Two men from a Waipahu residential drug treatment center have improved to guarded from critical condition this morning at Queen's Medical Center after one man allegedly stabbed the other, then stabbed himself and held police at bay for four hours yesterday.

Police said a 40-year-old man stabbed a 47-year-old man during an argument at the 94-104 Pupuole Place facility about 5:15 p.m. after the older man gave the younger man an eviction notice. The victim told police the younger man struck him and then stabbed him.

Police said the younger man barricaded himself in his apartment and refused to come out when officers arrived. Police negotiators and members of Specialized Services Division were summoned to the scene.

The standoff ended about 9:30 p.m. after officers went into the apartment and disabled the suspect with a beanbag round.
