Radford High School has hired Fred Salanoa as its new varsity football coach.

Salanoa, 24, steps in for Kelly Sur, who stepped down as coach following the past season. Salanoa played his high school ball at Radford and graduated from the school in 1996.

"It's exciting and it's an honor to be back and be able to coach at the school I graduated from," Salanoa said.

Salanoa completed a record-setting career as a quarterback at Eastern Washington in 2001. He set school records by passing for 3,057 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior.

He served as an assistant coach at Radford this past season, working with the Rams' quarterbacks. He will handle offensive coordinator duties as well as being the head coach. Thor Salanoa, Fred's older brother, will be the defensive coordinator.

"I'll come at them as a player's coach and I think I'll be able to earn their respect.," Salanoa said. "I'm still young and can still to the things that they do."

Radford finished 3-5 overall and 2-5 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Red Conference this season.

Weng and Garbelotti earn volleyball honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii freshman Yu Chuan Weng grabbed another honor, as she was named to the volleyball Daktronics NCAA II All-American first team.

Hawaii Pacific senior Susy Garbelotti was also named to the first team. Garbelotti was also a first-team selection in 2000.

Weng has also been named the AVCA NCAA II Freshman of the Year and an AVCA first-team All-American.
