Moffatt linked to
Elvis here and abroad

SO there was promoter Tom Moffatt, sitting at his desk working on his newest project, a return performance of Luis Bravo and his 35 member cast of "Forever Tango," when he got a call. It was pal Greg Kowal of First Honolulu Securities. He was calling on his cellular phone from the Country Music Hall of Fame where he and his daughter Lisa (outstanding athlete at Punahou and Harvard) were vacationing. Kowal was excited because, he told Moffatt, he was viewing the Elvis exhibit and found on display there a photo of Elvis with Uncle Tom. Quoth Moffatt: "Chicken skin? You bet." ...

AS for "Forever Tango," it ran for more than a year on Broadway and seemingly forever in San Francisco. I saw the company when here two years ago and was floored. It's going to run six performances here en route to its southeast Asian tour and director Bravo, asked what audiences should expect, answered succinctly: "Passion, melancholy, tenderness and violence." The show, sexy dancers and traditional Argentine orchestra, opens Dec. 26 and plays through Dec. 29 with Saturday and Sunday matinees at the Hawaii Theatre ...

Hilton rocks

WHO would have thought some years back that the Hilton chain would be the bedrock of rock? (Well, they do have beds!) The man who wrote, "I Write the Songs," will be singing many of them at the Hilton Hawaiian Village New Year's Eve. No, not Barry Manilow. He merely had a hit record of the song, putting beaucoup bucks into the jeans pockets of Bruce Johnson, now one of the Beach Boys. They'll be sending out "Good Vibrations" at the Hawaiian Village, while the Hilton Waikoloa Village presents World Class Rockers to help welcome in the New Year. The group was founded by former Steppenwolf member Nick St. Nicholas and his jolly old group includes Randy Meisner, founding member of the Eagles; Denny Laine, original lead singer with the Moody Blues and performer with Wings; plus musicians with Steppenwolf, Toto and Foreigner ...

NATIONAL comic Spanky and local comedian Paul Ogata will be performing Dec. 30 at Dave & Buster's Showroom. Spanky has appeared on many TV shows including "E.R.," "Profiler" and "The Late Show with David Letterman." He was also in the film "High School High" with Jon Lovitz. As for Ogata, in his words: "I've done none of that." ...

Guam aid

TWO local public relations women with Guam ties are organizing aid being sent to the island. A container of products they solicited are bound there on a barge which left yesterday. The two are Ruth Limtiaco of the Limtiaco Company, who lived on Guam for 14 years and whose late husband was Guamanian. The other is Barbara Pleadwell, who grew up in Guam and whose father, Jeff Pleadwell, still lives there and owns a restaurant, Jeff's Pirate's Cove. He's thrown open the eatery as a base to distribute goods to victims of Typhoon Pongsona ...

I'm taking some time off, and will return to this space Jan. 2 ...
