Fire destroyed a two-story warehouse in Nanakuli at 4:45 a.m. today, and fire officials said they believe it was set intentionally.

Police seek gunman who killed motorist

A police SWAT team was searching this morning for a gunman who shot and killed a man at a Waikele intersection last night.

Police homicide Lt. Bill Kato said the fatal shooting was apparently the result of an argument between the occupants of three vehicles. However, the shooting was not traffic-related violence, he said.

Kato said a white pickup truck, a dark blue Camaro and a 1993 station wagon were at the intersection of Lumiaina Street and Kamehameha Highway about 8:17 p.m. when the shooting occurred.

Someone in the blue Camaro got out of the car and a passenger in the station wagon fired one shot, Kato said. The station wagon then fled.

Jerry Brown, a witness, said he heard "a single pop" when he was in his truck at a stoplight in the Waipahu-bound direction on Kamehameha Highway.

"Next thing I know I see someone speeding away and then a guy on the ground," Brown said.

The victim was in the car next to him in the middle lane, Brown said, and it appeared that he was shot in the throat.

A supervisor with the city's Emergency Medical Services said the victim went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center-West. His name was not released pending notification of his family.

A man was arrested but released after police determined he was not a suspect.

HONOLULU

Police arrest suspect in Kalihi shooting

Police have arrested a suspect and are looking for another in connection with a Kalihi shooting yesterday.

A man pulled out a handgun and fired several times at a woman during an argument on the 700 block of Kopke St. about 2:30 p.m. No one was injured.

The gunman fled in a waiting car but the car returned to the scene later and its driver was arrested, police said.

The woman, who has not been identified, also left the scene after the shooting. Police are searching for her. Police said the gunman also fired at her car as he fled.

WAIKIKI

Anonymous rescuer saves drowning man

A woman saved a 74-year-old man from drowning in Waikiki yesterday and then left before anyone could thank her, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

The woman went to the man's rescue about 5:18 p.m. near the wall area of Kuhio Beach Park near Kapahulu Avenue. She pulled him out of the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

When Waikiki firefighters arrived, the man had a pulse and was conscious, Soo said.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel administered oxygen, and the man was able to talk shortly after. Soo said the man was taken by ambulance to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.

"We believe this woman saved the guy's life," Soo said.

The Fire Department helicopter spotted the man's body about 1:35 p.m. He had severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

North Shore rescuers keep busy in high surf

North Shore lifeguards were busy with rescues in 15- to 20-foot surf yesterday.

Lifeguards helped rescue six bodysurfers and bodyboarders who were swept out from the shore break by strong currents at Waimea Bay, the ocean safety department reported.

A surfer at Sunset Beach also needed assistance, and a lifeguard helped bring a team of tow-in surfers into Haleiwa harbor when their personal watercraft was in danger of sinking at a surfing break known as "Alligators."

WAILUKU >> The family of a retired Maui police officer who was killed in a traffic crash in June is suing over his death.

Antonio Funes, 54, was killed when he was struck by a truck while directing traffic for a Honoapiilani Highway widening project.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Mauvais, Grace Pacific Construction, Sun Systems, Dillingham Construction Pacific Ltd., Niki's Lounge and Gardenia Lounge.
