It's the season of sugar plum fairies, cavalier princes and mouse kings. Hawaii State Ballet starts "Nutcracker" season with its presentation at Mamiya Theatre.

Principal roles will be danced by members of The Junior Company, the school's advanced class. Among them are Joanna Lam, 15, Carrie Siko, 17, and Ryan Camou, 17. A highlight is the possibility of witnessing tomorrow's stars on a local stage. HSB has an international reputation for being a small program producing top dancers, including Amanda Schull ("Center Stage" star); Romy Beppu (Boston Ballet); Bryan Skates (Richmond, Va., Ballet); and others.

The production set to the music of Peter Tchaikovsky is based on E.T.A. Hoffman's fairy tale, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King." Set in Victorian times, young Clara is led on a Christmas Eve journey through magical lands of snow and sweets, where snowflakes and dancers from distant lands swirl about them.

Show times are 7 p.m. Fridays, 2:30 and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 22, with an additional 6 p.m. performance Dec. 22. Holiday treats will be available.

Tickets are $16, $18 and $22, with $2 off for keiki 12 and under and seniors. Call 947-2755 or 941-7837.

Ballet Hawaii's "Nutcracker" opens Dec. 20, playing through Dec. 22 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, with a line-up of international dance stars in leading roles, music performed by the Honolulu Symphony, new costumes by Anne Namba and numerous local soloists and corps de ballet members.

Katia Carranza and Luis Serrano from the Miami City Ballet star, respectively, as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier Prince.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25 to $55, with discounts for seniors, students and military.

An opening night gala package is available, with reserved parking, a pre-show dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m., and V.I.P. seating. Tickets are $125, available by calling 396-7216.

Call 526-4400 for information or to charge tickets. Call 732-7733 for group (20 or more) discounts.
