Food’ll be flyin’ when
actors start cookin’

THE Koreans who put together a show called "Cookin'," a cross between "Stomp" and "Benihana Goes Berserk," did a preview for kids at Shriners Hospital prior to their opening last night at the Hawaii Theatre. Those who saw a selection of it on the TV news are probably still asking themselves how such culinary mayhem came into being. Publicist Aubrey Hawk and production manager Mary James Lewis were given a shopping list of what to have on hand for the preview: Twelve packages of miso, 50 cucumbers, 50 carrots, 25 onions, 50 cabbages, 18 bell peppers -- all three colors -- plus a bag of rice, eight packages of firm tofu, a bottle of Bacardi rum and a bottle of 160 proof vodka. No, not to inspire the mad chopping, pounding, banging, slicing, dicing chefs, but for use in the show. Gallagher, move over. Those in the first 15 rows may be showered with food. "Cookin' " runs tonight through Saturday and on Sunday afternoon at the Hawaii Theatre ...

ONE of my favorite singers, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom will be joined by Ernie Cruz Jr. tonight at Chai's Island Bistro in Aloha Tower Marketplace. The two, who were named best female vocalist and male vocalist of the year at the Hoku awards, will reunite at Chai's next Thursday as well ...

Move over, Cazimeros

FEATURED at this month's Visitors Day Monday at Rotary Club's "Honolulu Sunrise" at 7:15 a.m. will be the Bumatai Brothers. In a rare showbiz pairing of the brothers, Ray and Andy Bumatai will be unveiling their new comedic TV show "Bumavision." Andy is well known for his stand-up act, which he's pretty much put behind him as he pursues a business career, and Ray, while he's appeared on stage in musicals and in his own show, will forever be known by most as the ranger in the KFC TV commercials. Visitors to the Rotary's monthly open house are welcomed to come early and meet members before the show. The breakfast buffet is $12 ...

THE day before he was to appear with the Honolulu Boy Choir on the Perry & Price show from the Hanohano Room, young Shawn Vincente broke his arm and after getting his arm in a cast, told his auntie, Mona Wood, that he wouldn't be able to perform. "Oh, you'll be there," Wood told him in her no-nonsense way, "unless you sing out of your arm." He showed, he sang, he conquered ...

Bohemian groove

CONGRATULATIONS to former isle resident Kevin McCollum. One of the producers of the runaway Broadway and London hit, "Rent," Kevin is also a producer of an opera, "Moulin Rouge" director Baz Luhrmann's hipster version of "La Boheme." The show, which opened this week, is sung in Italian by youthful performers. It got rave reviews, is a smash hit and lines at the box office are long. Kevin and his fellow "Rent" producer Jeffrey Seller, will likely be in the money once more and, ironically, "La Boheme" was the opera that inspired "Rent" in the first place. I've known Kevin since he was a lad -- his mother, the late Sue McCollum -- was a longtime friend ...
