Freshman of the Year


Brigham Young-Hawaii outside hitter Yu Chuan Weng was named AVCA Division II Freshman of the Year this week.

She is joined on the All-America First Team by fellow freshman Chun Yi Lin.

Weng averaged five kills a game during the regular season, ninth-best in the nation. She led the team in digs per game, at 3.29. Her hitting percentage (.285) was third in the Pacific West Conference.

Lin is third in the country in hitting percentage (.446) and 23rd in kills per game (4.6).

The Seasiders (24-2) play New Haven (Conn.) (34-5) today in the quarterfinals of the Division II National Tournament in Canyon, Texas. The match is slated to start at 8 a.m. Hawaii time.

Sea Warriors fall to Fighting Owls

Kennesaw State (Ga.) beat Hawaii Pacific 71-63 last night in basketball.

Leandro Maruoka led the Sea Warriors with 18 points, but HPU hit just 1 of 15 shots from beyond the 3-point line.

Bobby Brown scored 19 points for the Fighting Owls.

Kennesaw State beat Chaminade 83-78 on Tuesday night.

HPU and BYUH get tennis respect

The Hawaii Pacific and Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis teams are ranked in the top three in the country in Division II.

The Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings have Drury at the top, followed by the Sea Warriors and Seasiders.

HPU is tops in the West region, with BYUH, UC-Davis, UC-San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona rounding out the top five.
