Casting call on for
national TV commercials

ARE YOU a convincing storyteller? Can you grab the attention of an audience and keep it while expressing warmth and a sense of drama? If so, Reel Services Hawaii's Sue Larkin wants to hear from you.

Larkin is serving as casting director for a series of national television commercials that will feature local residents. Just grab a VHS or Mini-DV camcorder and record a short (two- to three-minute) video of yourself, sharing an experience you've had while either growing up or living in Hawaii. Producers are looking for something active or adventure-oriented and will accept submissions from those of all ages. Call 524-2278 for more details and an address to send tapes to. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday ...

ANOTHER FILM FESTIVAL kicks off at the Art House Theatres at Restaurant Row this weekend. Cinema Paradise 2002 starts off tomorrow, and fans of hip-hop culture will want to follow the mini-festival that will also be taking place. The Hip-Hop Film Fest is a program of films being screened that focus on different aspects of hip-hop; there are flicks that dig into turntablism, beatboxing, B-Boying and more.

If you're only going to catch one screening during the Hip-Hop Film Fest, make sure you check out "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme." Director Kevin Fitzgerald spent the last nine years working on the no-budget, independent film, interviewing the likes of DJ Kool Herc, the Last Poets, Freestyle Fellowship, Mos Def, Jurassic 5 and many others. Screenings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and 4:15 p.m. Thursday; visit www.cinemaparadise.org or www.hiphopfilm- fest.com for more info ...

SPEAKING OF the Hip-Hop Film Festival, the event's opening-night party also introduces a new look to a familiar Waikiki nightspot. The club at 478 Ena Road has changed its identity numerous times over the past few years; most recently it was known as the Pink Cadillac. Now you can call it the Island Cafe.

All ages are welcome to this kickoff for the film festival; $5 gets you in if you're of drinking age; otherwise you'll pay $7. Call 847-5214 ...

EVER WANTED to communicate with the dead? Check out the ARTS at Marks Garage tomorrow night for "Talking to Dead People," with Alice Anne Parker. The author, filmmaker, lecturer and psychic will lead a voyage to the other side, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $20; call 521-2903 ...
