Something to chew on: Include your dog in the holiday spirit without breaking the bank with a tree-shaped squeaker chew toy -- a mere $2.50 -- from Old Navy. The apparel store often offers dog products, such as leashes, bowls and toys, at discount prices. Also, what pooch doesn't like the occasional cruise in the car, top down and wind in his furry face? But paradise can turn to peril if a pebble or other small object flies into your dog's eye. That's why there are doggie glasses, as modeled by our stuffed pup. Tinted or untinted, the strap-on shades block out harmful UV rays. You'll find them for $24.95 at Purr-fect Paws in Kailua.

A variety of businesses offer services for pets

Does the holiday naughty-and-nice rule apply to pets? If you're one to play Santa to your Buster or Whiskers, it's unlikely the chewed-up rubber slipper or frayed couch will hold much sway. And while Buster's favorite rawhide is an old reliable, why not try something new -- healthy herring jerky, or canine sunglasses, perhaps? In exploring beyond that neighborhood pet store, you'll find that the world of pet products and services is a vast one indeed.

Here are a few ideas. With all the variety out there, you're sure to find something perfect for your beloved companion -- whether he's furry, feathered, naughty or nice.

Carried in comfort and style: This trendy leopard-print animal carrier is from Purr-fect Paws, $149.95. The carrier is as versatile as it is pretty, with a choice of shoulder strap or duffle handles for toting, loops for attaching to seat belts and clip-on straps that convert it into a backpack.

Warm and fuzzy: There's nothing quite like putting on a big, thirsty robe after a warm bath. Now your dog, like our toy canine, can experience that same luxury with a bathrobe designed to fit the canine form. Purr-fect Paws carries the robes in pink and blue for $18.95; coordinating bone-shaped towels to match are $16.95.

Roll 'em! Let your li'l critter loose! Priced at less than $4, the Kritter Krawler from Pet's Discount is an economical way to give your mouse or guinea pig some exercise and freedom. The hard plastic ball is well ventilated and affords protection as well as freedom to roam.
