Chang represents UH
with 177th-place finish

Victoria Chang wrapped up the cross-country season with a 177th-place finish at the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship at the Wabash Family Sports Center at Terre Haute, Ind., yesterday.

Chang ran the 6K course in 21 minutes, 54.7 seconds, just three seconds behind her regional time from last week despite 30 degree temperatures.

The junior from Punahou had her second-best start of the season, running the first kilometer in 3:08 uphill, but slowed from that point. Chang finished 217th in the race as a freshman last year.

"I was in position following the first kilometer, but then I felt like my legs were cramping and feeling stiff and rigid," Chang said. "At that point, I kind of lost focus and concentration. I went in with no expectations and goals, but it was a very good experience overall."

North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan took first place in 19:36. Brigham Young won the national team title with 85 points, 28 more than second-place Stanford.

Seasiders headed to Texas

The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team received its draw for the NCAA Division II national championship yesterday.

The tournament will be held in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas A&M. The Seasiders (24-2) will open against New Haven (34-5) Dec. 5. Should they win, they would play the winner between Tampa (27-6) and Northern Colorado (31-2) in the final four.

The Seasiders are three wins away from their second NCAA national championship and 10th overall.

Dillon to enter Hall of Fame

Patti Dillon will be inducted into the Honolulu Marathon Hall of Fame Dec. 5 at the Oahu Country Club.

Dillon won the marathon each year between 1978 and 1981, setting course records each time.

Those victories propelled Dillon, who ran as Patti Lyons Catalano, to the top of U.S. distance running.

She broke the national marathon record four times in mainland cities and last spring was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, the Honolulu Marathon Association also announced that two-time champion Irina Bogacheva of Kyrgyzstan will be back in the Honolulu Marathon field to make another run at Russian record-holder Svetlana Zakharova. Bogacheva lost a memorable duel against Zakharova in 1997 before winning the race in 1998-99.

Franca Fiacconi of Italy will also be back for her third appearance. She finished fourth last year.

The marathon will be held Dec. 8.

Ross, Curtin named players of the week

SMU guard Quinton Ross and Tulsa's Allison Curtin have been named the Western Athletic Conference's players of the week for basketball.

Ross scored a career-high 28 points against TCU on Sunday while Curtin scored 30 against Oklahoma and another 30 against Oklahoma State. The Golden Hurricanes split those games.

Hawaii nominated Haim Shimonovich and Christen Roper.
