Chaminade swept
out of West Regional

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. >> UC San Diego ousted Chaminade from the NCAA Divsion II West Regional Volleyball Tournament yesterday.

The Tritons (26-4) beat the Silverswords 30-19, 30-23, 30-17.

Chaminade (15-8) was making its first NCAA volleyball postseason appearance. UCSD has reached the postseason 22 straight years.

Kahala Kabalis led Chaminade with 10 kills and 13 digs.

UCSD's Wilson sisters -- Bonnie and Jennie -- combined for 22 kills and 17 digs.

"I thought they (Chaminade) were really scrappy in the early going," said Tritons coach Duncan McFarland. "We expected them to play tough defense. The Hawaiian teams usually do. But we built up pretty good serving pressure and we started timing our blocks better."

Viloria to fight Rossell on ESPN on Sunday

Brian Viloria might not get a chance to fight in front of 15,000 people this weekend, but he will still get another chance at Alberto Rossell.

Viloria's rematch for the North American Boxing Federation flyweight championship has been moved off the Gatti-Ward undercard and onto a special edition of Sunday Night Fights on ESPN at the Sports Plus Events Center 9:30 a.m. Hawaii time this Sunday.

The site has changed six times in the past several days, but Team Viloria manager Gary Gittelsohn says he doesn't expect it to change again.

"I still want Brian to fight in front of that many people," Gittelsohn said. "But that will have to come later. I think this is a much better showcase for Brian since it's on television."

Top performers

>> Susy Garbelotti, Hawaii Pacific volleyball: Garbelotti wrapped up her senior season for HPU with her 12th double-double of the season. She finished the regular season third in the NCAA in kills per game with 5.62 and yesterday was named the PacWest Player of the Year.

>> Shawn Opunui, Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball: The freshman transfer from BYU-Provo answered a few questions about the Seasiders in the post-Tabuse era, dishing out 19 assists in two games of the Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic last week. Opunui is taking over the point guard spot left vacant when Yuta Tabuse decided to turn professional in Japan.
